Very few people spend large sums of money on purchases other than their homes. But those are things that you keep, your wedding day is over in about 8 hours. So, when the market tanked, people (rightfully so) cut their own personal budgets. And since weddings truly are a luxury item, they were the first to get trimmed. They still needed food.
