Research, writing and ruminations. Avoiding your data (also known as burying your head in the sand). June 30, 2015. June 30, 2015. But I’ve avoided really. My approach to research is reflexive; I believe that it is important to acknowledge the impact that I as the researcher have on the research, and to actively reflect on this. My relationship with participants affects what they tell me and how they ‘tell’ themselves. As Stanley and Wise (1993: 161) contend:. Follow Blog via Email. The Challenges of Doi...

Research, writing and ruminations. Reflecting on Motivations for Doctoral Study. May 31, 2015. June 30, 2015. There is a wealth of literature which highlights the difficulty in maintaining motivation throughout a doctoral degree (Golde 2005; Lovitts 2001; Powell and Green 2007). Issues such as isolation and poor relationships with supervisors can de-motivate individuals, despite their academic potential and original enthusiasm. How are your PhD applications going? Might have a look just out of interest!

Research, writing and ruminations. Starting a Writing Group (re-blog). July 30, 2015. I wrote a short piece for jobs.ac.uk about my experiences of academic writing in the hope that it might encourage others to write with their fellow students- writing can be a lonely experience but it doesn’t have to be! Here’s the post I wrote about starting a writing group:. I decided that some of these things that I had agreed to do needed to have some time dedicated to them, otherwise they just wouldn’t get done....

Research, writing and ruminations. April 30, 2015. April 30, 2015. This post covers some of the things I’ve been reflecting on after giving my first presentation since starting the PhD and after I attended a conference earlier this month. Public speaking has traditionally been the preserve of men, and many of the traits associated with a talented public speaker- assertiveness, control and authority- are also associated with masculinity (for more on this see Mills, 2012). The imposter phenomenon has been ...

Moving on… (from your PhD) | Stuff About Unis

https://ddubdrahcir.wordpress.com/2015/04/23/moving-on-from-your-phd

A jargon-free exploration of hot topics in higher education…. Extending state loans to postgrad study: an insufficient solution to the conundrum? Is UK higher education ‘familyist’? Moving on… (from your PhD). April 23, 2015. This is last of three blogs I wrote for the Bristol Doctoral College’s ‘Year in the Life of a PhD’ series, which you can find here. What is an academic CV supposed to look like? You could possibly hunt down some of the examples buried in the Vitae. Have useful information on this?

Calculating tuition fees fairly is a slippery fish. | Stuff About Unis

https://ddubdrahcir.wordpress.com/2014/09/26/calculating-tuition-fees-fairly-is-a-slippery-fish

A jargon-free exploration of hot topics in higher education…. Is it a PhD…or not a PhD? The last year of the PhDand out of the other side →. Calculating tuition fees fairly is a slippery fish. September 26, 2014. Are tuition fees justified, and if so, how much should they be? All over the world, fees for studying at university are either being introduced or increased, and there are very few countries that buck that trend. This suggests that there must be strong arguments for them. The best employment rat...

Who should go to university? Who does? | Stuff About Unis

https://ddubdrahcir.wordpress.com/2014/11/18/who-should-go-to-university-who-does

A jargon-free exploration of hot topics in higher education…. Might Students in Germany and England see university differently? Who’s bright enough to go to university? Who should go to university? November 18, 2014. Accepted answer to the first question is ‘people who can satisfactorily complete the course, and who want to study’. The second question asks whether those who can and want to actually do. This breaks down into three topics, so I’ll do a blog on each. It’s a trilogy! Enter your comment here.

Let’s talk about Politics. April 21, 2015. June 19, 2015. The Very Hungry Ciretta-pillar. Before I get in to this blog post I just need to make one thing very clear:. I am not, and do not think I am, an expert in politics. The only question you need to ask yourself is:. What do you want for you and the country you live in? If you can answer that, your voice matters. And every vote counts. The Guardian, 20 April 2015 – “Tories still ahead of Labour in latest Guardian/ICM poll”. I’m not voting because they...

Rachel's Rambles

Monday, February 23, 2015. Will I recognize his voice when he calls my name? Yesterday at church one of the speakers talked about Mary Magdalene. I've been thinking about it all day so I thought I would share some of my thoughts. They talked about how Jesus is the Good Sheperd and he knows each of us individually. The story they referenced is when Mary comes to the tomb on the morning of the resurrection. I like the way it's told in. 13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? The speaker ponted o...
