Saturday, November 6, 2010. Better Than A Thousand Words? It's been awhile since I posted anything. I've written, sure; but nothing that felt worthy of publishing. There's so much going on that it's been difficult to step back and reflect on all of the changes. Rachel In Ouray: May 2010

http://www.rachelinouray.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 28, 2010. Between mountains tonight. The volcanic, old-growth alpine is behind me now. The rain chases me, but I am faster than the clouds. Even with a rocketbox. I watch the setting sun light the grass in the field like no Hollywood studio could recreate. It turns out that nature's last. Green is gold, too. I watch the sun set further, hoping no farmers will come to check on their fields until after I’ve crept away when the sun's chariot returns in the morning. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Rachel In Ouray: It's Not the Destination, It's the Journey

http://www.rachelinouray.blogspot.com/2010/03/its-not-destination-its-journey_27.html

Saturday, March 27, 2010. It's Not the Destination, It's the Journey. I'm getting ready to head to the desert for some rock climbing. (That is, after I ski the 18" of snow that fell overnight here in the San Juans.) I hope to have better luck this trip than last time I went out, about a week ago. Philippe and I planned to get in our first days' rock climbing for the season at Indian Creek. There isn't much on this drive. Lots of open range and beautiful scenery (Paradox Valley? Near the Colorado/Utah bor...

Rachel In Ouray: January 2010

http://www.rachelinouray.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 31, 2010. Mixed climbing has not been my favorite climbing discipline. Steep rock climbing with lots of sharp points protruding from my arms and legs, tenuous holds, big reaches? Not so sure about that. Early this season, I put in a few days to get in shape as the ice was still forming. Each day ended with me saying some variation of, "I could be clipping bolts in Spain right now.". Put it well when he said, "everyone hates mixed climbing until they start to get good at it.". Learning to ...

Rachel In Ouray: June 2010

http://www.rachelinouray.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 21, 2010. Just Like Riding a Bike. In a typical summer, I can be found anywhere. except Colorado. Trekking in Asia, climbing snowy slopes in Washington, scaling rock walls in Canada; it seems my singular purpose was to leave the very place I'd chosen to call Home. So, ever been mountain biking? It's more of an assumption than a question with folks around here. People have quivers of bikes like they have quivers of skis. Back in the day, I rode the lifts at the Summit County resorts, sped thr...

abaluba: Valley Pics

http://patrickpharo.blogspot.com/2011/10/valley-pics.html

Monday, October 10, 2011. I'd like to post a few good pictures from the last week or so. Basically, we had a bit of a storm blow through Yosemite last week and shut things down for a while. In the interim, the crew, now swollen to include the Brothers Kauffman, drove down to Bishop in search of sun and boulders. We found some of the former, and lots of the latter. And now, more pics (most by Neil Kauffman of Planet Kauffman. Waiting out snow in between tries. Sunset at The Happy Boulders. The final headw...

abaluba: For the Birds

http://patrickpharo.blogspot.com/2012/02/for-birds.html

Monday, February 27, 2012. Just last week I was out there, though February certainly isn't prime time. At 7,000 feet, it's much more of a summer destination. These days, there is a fair bit of ice seeping from the walls. I went out to give a tour to RD Pascoe, the Policy Director at The Access Fund. Climbers (Maybe on The Bulge? abaluba: The DragonChicken

http://patrickpharo.blogspot.com/2010/03/dragonchicken.html

Thursday, March 11, 2010. At one of these brief bouts with consciousness, I recognize the siren call of space - a bit of breathing room. She had backed off for a moment, likely to stretch her legs and prepare my demise. What sweet call for domestication would she use as a ploy for my evisceration? I settle back into wary sleep. Here she comes, pissed off, all claws and fangs. Thank God I'm wearing my hockey gloves. How'd those get there? Who cares, man! It's a public execution, and I'm here in my best wo...

abaluba: The Salathe Wall

http://patrickpharo.blogspot.com/2010/06/salathe-wall.html

Friday, June 25, 2010. Had we been able to see the entire Southwest face of El Capitan falling away below our feet, Josh or I might have passed out. The terror of hanging that far into space has surely reduced better men to tears. Instead, we crawled slowly and half blind to the promise of an uncomfortable bivouac on Long Ledge, managing the fatigue of our back-to-back 16-hour climbing days by taking small bites of dried mango. 8221; I wondered. Didn’t this asshole know how bummed out I was? Before we le...

abaluba: Images from Yosemite

http://patrickpharo.blogspot.com/2010/06/images-from-yosemite.html

Thursday, June 3, 2010. I've been able to take a few photos and shoot a couple of videos from these last few days in Yosemite. Today, we're resting, catching up on life outside The Ditch, and enjoying a leisurely, stunningly beautiful day in the shadow of El Cap, Half Dome, and The Sentinel. This is a magical place. The walls are big and intimidating, the climbing is hard, and the feeling of one's own insignificance is magnified by the thundering Yosemite Falls and a sea of golden granite. Love you, Mom.

abaluba: A very fine start

http://patrickpharo.blogspot.com/2011/09/very-fine-start.html

Thursday, September 29, 2011. A very fine start. You know how I can tell I'm in California? My back is killing me. The final day in the car apparently didn't sit too well, and I've been stretching and doing yoga like a madman to try to remedy this annoyance. It hasn't kept me from climbing and hiking around, but I'm beginning to take all that "30 and over the hill" talk as the truth. Damn it. Chilling under the Hulk. Josh eyes the raps. abaluba: Colorado Carp Habit and its export to the Farm

http://patrickpharo.blogspot.com/2012/05/colorado-carp-habit-and-its-export-to.html

Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Colorado Carp Habit and its export to the Farm. I feel a little naughty every time I do it. Lately, I’ve been throwing flies for carp. Big fuckers. The kind of fish that you see swimming around and wonder if it’s gonna jump out of the lake and bite you. One rammed into my foot after I spooked it, and I yelped like a little girl. When you hook into one, the reel screams like a hummingbird. We were all thrilled that he remained active and vital after her death. He took a road tr...

La vie a Montreal

La vie a Montreal. Sunday, June 23, 2013. Dad came in on Thursday night to spend the weekend. It was really nice to have some company on this my 2nd to last weekend in Montreal! And luckily, we had some absolutely beautiful weather on Friday and got to do a lot of walking around. We had lunch at an awesome place called iBurger where you place your order on this giant-iPad-like screen built into your table. The food was good and the concept was pretty unique! When I was younger my father used to ask me, Rachel, are you saying something or are you just talking? That is something I ask myself each time I stand before an audience. My desire is to encourage people in their faith journey whether one-on-one, small group Bible study, or large group retreats and conferences. I love to communicate God's truth. As autumn approached and frost threatened our garden’s beauty, my husband decided we should keep a red geranium inside instead of tossing it, Why throw out a living plant? He insisted. It was a bit overgrown, the soil level was low and the wire hanger bent so I was ready to pitch it! Michael cared for our nearly orphaned hanging basket and nurtured it throughout the long winter. It started to bloom again. Look at this sick looking plant! I don’t think it is going to make it, but I hope it does! When I pl...
