These are the days. Monday, November 29, 2010. It should make us as adults hold ourselves accountable in how we discuss and read these books to our children, if we choose to at all. Monday, November 15, 2010. Multi-Modal Literacy and Teaching Immigrant Students. I did have a question, though. How could teachers go about helping immigrant students if they do not have as much one-on-one time with students as this instructor had with Dennis? Monday, November 8, 2010. For example, I still find it fascinating...

these are the days: Poetry in MGRP and "Invitations"

http://www.rachelsardery.blogspot.com/2010/10/poetry-in-mgrp-and-invitations.html

These are the days. Sunday, October 24, 2010. Poetry in MGRP and "Invitations". To teach students to think creatively and for themselves? What a wonderful way to engage students in literacy! October 25, 2010 at 4:03 AM. October 25, 2010 at 4:13 AM. Poetry definitely requires creativity! October 25, 2010 at 6:45 AM. I agree that invitationals would be time consuming, but when I thought about it, I hoped that students would get so interested in the topics they choose, that they would choose to work on them...

http://www.rachelsardery.blogspot.com/2010/10/powell-and-davidson-article.html

These are the days. Monday, October 18, 2010. Powell and Davidson article. I lived the elementary school dream with field trips ranging from the zoo to apple orchards to fire stations and even to Camp for a few days where all of the fifth graders stayed overnight! I must admit that my elementary school field trips were no where near as in depth as the donut shop. While we would occasionally discuss a few things before we went on the trips, they were more for enjoyment than education. This teacher...I cou...

These are the days. Sunday, October 31, 2010. Chapters 5 and 7 in MGRP and Seedfolks. 5 and 7 MGRP. October 31, 2010 at 2:26 PM. I agree with the idea of allowing for children to express themselves in different ways as well. It is important to remember that students are different people with different desires! I also agree that Paul Fleischman does to a great job showing and not telling. It is such a great story! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Chapters 5 and 7 in MGRP and Seedfolks.

bilblog: More Show Than Tell.

http://kikikazee.blogspot.com/2010/11/more-show-than-tell.html

Monday, November 1, 2010. More Show Than Tell. I am always amazed when a particular work is able to bring life to a character in a single paragraph, and sometimes even less. Allen’s Bringing Subjects to Life. I love garden metaphors. They are generous and expansive in interpretation and universal in application. In The Profit. Khalil Gibran speaks of friendship. “He is your field which you sow with love and reap with Thanksgiving.”. Paul Fleishman’s, Seedfolks. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

bilblog: MGRP in Action

http://kikikazee.blogspot.com/2010/10/mgrp-in-action.html

Monday, October 18, 2010. Today was the first week of the School of Education’s Science Saturday program. After this week’s readings I had a much clearer picture of multi-genre usage within a single theme. I participated in this week’s installment of Science Saturday and was able to see firsthand the effects of multi-genre usage on the learning process. Though it was scheduled for between 9:30 am and 12 PM it ran a little long. The elementary students were divided into three groups, k-2nd, 3rd-4.

To Do the Write. Monday, November 15, 2010. Modes, Texts, and Affordance. I enjoyed reading both selections from “The Inner World of the Immigrant Child,” and “Literacy Moves On,” and feel that they are an appropriate compliment for each other, the former an experiential explanation of the latter. As there are a number of great discussions already underway concerning first article, I will devote this post primarily to the more analytical of the two texts. I will say that I found the discussion on two poi...

To Do the Write: MGRPs in Action

http://todothewrite.blogspot.com/2010/10/mgrps-in-action.html

To Do the Write. Monday, October 18, 2010. Perhaps I’m easy to catch, but I couldn’t help but notice the emphasis of teaching students “skills in context”. Perhaps that was by design, or it could simply be because my research for my own Multigenre Research Paper (MGRP) (which has unfortunately pushed this post to the periphery) has a focus on this point as well. Either way, it caught my attention. MGRPs, from both the book’s description and even in our short experience so far in doing one on our own.

To Do the Write: Dilemmas and Discourses

http://todothewrite.blogspot.com/2010/10/dilemmas-and-discourses.html

To Do the Write. Monday, October 4, 2010. I appreciated the attention which Karen Wohlwend’s article “Dilemmas and Discourses of Learning to Write: Assessment as a Contested Site” drew to the realities of teaching in an actual, student-filled setting. Her discussion of the “surface dilemmas,” or, “clashes between overlapping discourses,” experienced by actual, practicing teachers is a comfort to me (perhaps strangely) as an aspiring educator. In the particular case of New Jersey, where the current Govern...

bilblog: The Power of Multi-genre

http://kikikazee.blogspot.com/2010/11/power-of-multi-genre.html

Wednesday, November 24, 2010. The Power of Multi-genre. My experience with the multi-genre project was much different than I expected. I was prepared to learn more about multiculturalism and the benefits of building a multicultural classroom community. I believed this would come through investigation on my research paper. I did not have much confidence that the other genres would be as persuasive, nor would they provide any additional understanding. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Arthur J. Tippin.

To Do the Write: Proceduring Process

http://todothewrite.blogspot.com/2010/10/proceduring-process.html

To Do the Write. Monday, October 11, 2010. Let me begin with this: I'm finally ready to start. Having moved in from Jersey the week before school began, it has taken me until now to finally get situated, organized and to get rid of that terrible fog of not knowing where everything was or what I needed to do next. It is truly a relief. Why not start making some procedures for my life so I can learn what it's like to live and work with them? Learning how to implement procedures that I. You be the judge.

To Do the Write: October 2010

http://todothewrite.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

To Do the Write. Monday, October 25, 2010. 8220;Poetry [like death? Is the great equalizer.” –Camille A. Allen. There is little more I can see to add to Allen’s chapter except to add my personal experience with poetry and think about how I can use both in my classroom. I have to admit that I made a start at writing my response in the form of a poem. However, as I share many of the same feelings shared in the opening of our poetry chapter, I couldn’t bring myself to finish it, much less present it. I will...
