Other Thoughts: 11/1/14 - 12/1/14

Random thoughts, odds and ends of life, and other reasons my friends think i'm a little weird. Saturday, November 1, 2014. A Mayor for the People. This weekend, Boston is remembering. The passing of its longest serving mayor, Thomas Menino. He was always a low-key guy. It was never "all about him" but more all about the city. He knew it well, the neighborhoods, the people, the diversity. He was not always the smoothest public speaker. Nicknamed "Mumbles," sometimes you weren't quite 100% sure what he...

Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity: December 2013
http://urbanvista-boston.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity. Sunday, December 22, 2013. December brings short days and chilled evenings. But what compensates for shivering outside and inside alike (our place is not so well-insulated) is the soft yellow lighting. Of the later afternoons, as well as the Christmas card dusk light of snow-covered scenes, such as the one on the right in Brookline, just outside of Boston. The visual treats make the winter evenings of December a special time of the year. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity. Monday, January 19, 2015. The Bleak Midwinter and a Walk Around the Pond at Dusk. Our nearly snow-less winter continues. However, that has not meant that the cold hasn't invaded our fair city (Cambridge, MA). The Charles River is frozen. And so is Fresh Pond. The bleak midwinter without snow is especially bleak. The cold keeps one from lingering and there is little to see in the snowless, barren landscape. Hope is hard to find. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Thanks to my f...

Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity: October 2013
http://urbanvista-boston.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity. Saturday, October 26, 2013. Views of a Muted Autumn. Perhaps it's been a bit dry, or it was too wet, or the temperatures too warm. I'm not sure, but the colors have been fairly muted this fall. Often we witness truly brilliant colors. We have the bright oranges and reds of the sugar maples, the brilliant yellows of the honey locusts, birch and flowering pears. Each tree's timing is a little different, creating a magnificent backdrop of color. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://urbanvista-boston.blogspot.com/2014/11/along-charles-in-late-fall.html
Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity. Saturday, November 8, 2014. Along the Charles, in the Late Fall. It was a beautiful, sunny day, despite the cold (about 4-45 deg. F or around 5 deg. C). I ventured out to Watertown Square and rode back to "our fair city" (Cambridge) along the bike path. Leaves float in a small. Lagoon off the side. Of the bike path. Bare trees, green trees, and fall foliage mix along the river bank. At the riverbend out in brighton. Grand trees line the riverbank park. Hope you enjoy it!

Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity. Sunday, June 15, 2014. Swan boats in the lagoon at Boston's. A view through the graceful drapings of the willows on the banks of the. Lagoon at the Public Garden, just steps from my office. I just love this collection of flowers in a garden near my home in Cambridge. My favorite footbridge is constructed with steel arches and cables. Supporting the wood deck. This is the Blue Heron Bridge over the. Charles River between Newton (foreground) and Watertown, on a June.

Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity: Saturday in the Park in a Snowless Winter
http://urbanvista-boston.blogspot.com/2014/12/saturday-in-park-in-snowless-winter.html
Urban Vistas: Boston and Vicinity. Saturday, December 27, 2014. Saturday in the Park in a Snowless Winter. Often by Christmas or New Year, here in New England, we would have snow on the ground, or at least frozen ponds. However, this Christmas was relatively warm, having followed weeks of warm yet cloudless days. No snow or frozen ponds. Finally, on Christmas afternoon, the sun came out. We took a brisk walk by Pleasure Bay. Here are some photos of a Saturday in the Park, on a snowless winter's day.
