Rob Overton on sailing rules, calls, and tactics. Monday, November 5, 2012. Play 17 and the Shake and Bake. This post stems from a conversation I had with a coach at a team-race event. The coach was complaining about a bunch of calls his team never seemed to get in their favor. Naturally, he wondered how we umpires could screw up so badly. From my experience and his description of what the sailors were doing, I don’t think we screwed up, at least not most of the time. The animation above shows Play 17 wo...

Rob Overton on sailing rules, calls, and tactics. Sunday, September 23, 2012. OK, here’s my analysis of the scenario in the posting ‘Baker 2012’ on this blogsite. First, as everybody agrees, A entered the zone clear ahead of both her teammate B and her opponent X, and as she never left the zone or tacked, A is therefore entitled to mark-room from both boats. Except possibly for a brief moment when she is jibing, A also has right of way over X. By the time X is at the mark, B is a windward boat required t...

Rob Overton on sailing rules, calls, and tactics. Monday, December 10, 2012. Shall" and "Will" in Sailing Instructions. As even a casual glance at the Racing Rules of Sailing will show, the word “shall” appears often. That’s not a common word, at least in the American idiom, but a lot of readers don’t think much about it, assuming that “shall” is simply a synonym of “will”, preferred for some arcane reason by the rules writers. Begin 1 January 2015. Before that date a final schedule of meetings will.

Rob Overton on sailing rules, calls, and tactics. Friday, August 9, 2013. Correction to 'More about Redress'. I apologize for the error. Racing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016. Wednesday, August 7, 2013. In the last post I covered the most common reason for requesting redress – actions or non-actions by race committees, protest committees, organizing authorities, and the like. In this post we’ll look at the other reasons a boat might request redress. Rule 2 or a penalty or warning under rule 69.2(c). Reading ...

At the Stoney Burke Collegiate regatta this weekend (hosted by the Cal Sailing Team at the Treasure Island Sailing Center in San Francisco Bay), there was an interesting request for redress. Matt Knowles on the Racing Rules of Sailing. Wednesday, February 1, 2012. Fines for Rule 69? There has been a bit of speculation around that the RYA and/or ISAF Rule 69 inquiries into Ben Ainsle's conduct in Australia may yield a fine for Mr. Ainsle rather than (or perhaps in addition to) a suspension. While quite common in other professional sports, I've never heard of a fine being issued under MNA/ISAF Rule 69 jurisdiction - has anyone else? Posted by Matt Knowles. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Monday, August 10, 2009. I had a great time at NASC summer camp in Mt. Hood, Oregon. Me and my family drove our RV all summer. We went to Newport Beach, California and drove up the coast of California and then to Mt. Hood. My favorite part was going to Universal Studios. We saw lots of fun stuff along the way and on the way home. I learned alot of new tips at ski camp this summer and made some new friends. It was fun to have alot of Flagstaff kids there too.
