Monday, February 11, 2008. Teaching radio is hard enough without dealing with this constant language barrier. Case in point: the first word my students taught me was “buhoro,” Kinyarwanda for “slowly.” It’s pretty clear I talk too fast and my students have trouble following me. I’m starting to learn now, though, and have started checking in more often with the students. I say, “Sybio? They reply, “Nybio.”. 8220;You got it? 8220;Yeah, we got it.”. Monday, August 27, 2007. It's True. I am Dutch. A street sign in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town's Muslim quarter. VanderMeulen is my mother's maiden name. It’s not often that I’ve been a visible minority. I’m a white farm girl from eastern Ontario. But here on the campus where I work, I’m one of just a handful of white faces. And so far, I’m the only one with this so-called American accent.
