Curtiss OX-5 Rebuild: February 2015
http://curtiss-ox-5.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Progress on the restoration of a Curtiss OX-5 Motor for my WACO NINE. Thursday, February 26, 2015. Exhaust Manifold Flanges - Inlet Side Cut Fixture. Just like the other fixture I'm using the vise to hold the fixture so again I started with a piece of steel angle clamped in the vise. The flange sets on the angle while cutting. I cut 2 slots in the piece of angle to provide clearance while making the cuts. I left the center piece so I can clamp the flange in place while cutting. To do this I made an "L" s...

Curtiss OX-5 Rebuild: January 2015

Progress on the restoration of a Curtiss OX-5 Motor for my WACO NINE. Saturday, January 31, 2015. Exhaust Manifold Inlet Flange - Cutting Ideas. My idea is to cut them with my spiffy Dillon Mk III (now Cobra Torches. I then clamped a piece of angle to my practice piece of 3/16" steel to use as a guide to simulate a fixture for guiding the angle of the torch cut. With the torch resting on the the angle I made a couple cuts across the steel. Rag Bag Aero Works. Thursday, January 29, 2015. There are a varie...

Curtiss OX-5 Rebuild: May 2014
http://curtiss-ox-5.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Progress on the restoration of a Curtiss OX-5 Motor for my WACO NINE. Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Exhaust Manifold Heat Boxes Completed. I find it easier to start forming the tube at the ends. The middle is always easy to form because you have the leverage of the long strip to bend it. It turned out that a 1 7/8" hole saw was the right size for the spring back of the steel. I used it to form the first 3/4" of each end of the strip with a light hammering. I found it easier to spot weld the baffle to the shel...

Curtiss OX-5 Rebuild: October 2014
http://curtiss-ox-5.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Progress on the restoration of a Curtiss OX-5 Motor for my WACO NINE. Saturday, October 25, 2014. I have some long thin Items which need derusting, tools, etc. but won't fit in a standard 5 gallon mud bucket I used before. For sacrificial iron (anode) I decided to use re-bar since it's cheap and easy to get. I bent it to an "L" shape to work better on the bottom end of the part. The process supposedly works better on Line of Sight between the part and the Anode. The current is low but the wire end with a...

Curtiss OX-5 Rebuild: December 2014
http://curtiss-ox-5.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Progress on the restoration of a Curtiss OX-5 Motor for my WACO NINE. Thursday, December 4, 2014. Fitting Heat Boxes To Lower Exhaust Manifold Shells. Welded to the bottom of each manifold there is a heat box for Carburetor Heat. Before I can weld them on I need to adjust the shape of the weld flanges to fit more closely to the lower shell. The first step was to mark where the box sets on the shell. You can see how the shell is not a flat on the bottom as planned so the ends do not set down on the shell.

Curtiss OX-5 Rebuild: April 2014
http://curtiss-ox-5.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Progress on the restoration of a Curtiss OX-5 Motor for my WACO NINE. Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Exhaust Manifold Heat Box Patterns. Based on the OX-5 parts list, under the right hand exhaust manifold there was a heat box. I would assume it was for Carburetor Heat to stop ice forming in the carburetor. But, according to Ted Barber, in his book The Barnstorming Mustanger,. The lack of Carburetor Heat appears to be one of the reasons this engine developed a bad reputation. The other reasons, according ...

Fly Baby N4284C - Memories and Adventures: March 2010
http://flybabyfun.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Fly Baby N4284C - Memories and Adventures. Saturday, March 6, 2010. Dennis: This really is just like building a wooden model. The sticks were cut 3/4" square and 3/4" x 1/2" and, fitted into the jig to make each side just like a model. We cut the sticks with uncle bill's Shop Smith using a hollow ground planner blade. It gave a very smooth finish. Dad: The glue we used was Weldwood Resourcenal, a two part glue, which was a white powder and an a maroon colored liquid, which I think was a mix of 50 % each.
