Friday, July 20, 2012. It is time for a change. *drumroll, please* I am leaving my job. About a year and a half ago, I decided it was high time to pursue an M.A., and I was fortunate to find that the Folklore program at I.U. is an incredibly good fit for my interests. My plan, at the time, was to simply be a part-time student. I could not possibly give up a comfortable full-time job, right? Tuesday, July 17, 2012. Caught Up In Clay: Wise Words
http://caughtupinclay.blogspot.com/2012/07/wise-words.html
Thursday, July 12, 2012. 8220;In the spirit of raku, there is a necessity to embrace the element of surprise. There can be no fear of losing what was once planned and there must be an urge to grow along with discovery of the unknown. In the spirit of raku: make no demands. Expect nothing. Follow no absolute plan. Be secure in change. Learn to accept another solution. Prefer to gamble on your intuition.". Paul Soldner, "Raku, As I Know It". Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sunday, June 17, 2012. A fresh bowl from today's lesson! Though I've done a number of raku workshops and tutored folks on various clay-related topics and projects, it is only recently that I've endeavored to teach someone with no experience to throw. I love the idea of offering lessons someday, or teaching at a local studio, so I'm glad a few friends have been willing to serve as guinea pigs! If you'd like to see more, my friend Thomas shared a bit about the experience here on his blog. Let us first cons...

Caught Up In Clay: The Potter's Art
http://caughtupinclay.blogspot.com/2012/07/potters-art.html
Tuesday, July 17, 2012. Seizing upon the immanent artfulness of pottery, the potter can withdraw into isolation and ascend along the arc that ends in a transcendence of consciousness. Or, through the earthiness of technique and the compound significance inherent in the committed rearranging of the world, the potter can join the millions remaining on earth whose daily work brings them, roughly, directly, into awareness of their positions in the cosmos. Thursday, April 28, 2011. So this is grad school. I am trying to write the final paper for my first ever Folklore class. The only other thing that has ever made me feel this way is my art. It has been too long. I never wanted to be an author, not really. So what new path is this? Thursday, April 21, 2011. And participated in IU's Staff Celebration, which allows staff members who are also artists, craftspeople, and performers to exhibit their skills:. All in all a productive day in the world of ceramics.

Tuesday, March 15, 2011. With the recent quake and tsunami in Japan, I just wanted to take a moment to say "Ganbatte, Nihon! Hang in there, Japan. You've got a long road of recovery ahead of you, but you're a strong nation with a long history (unfortunately) of recovering from difficulty and destruction. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Monday, April 30, 2012. My life is conspiring to pull me out of this reverie. I've made tea bowl after tea bowl, and it's been delightful to spend time exploring these new forms. The last of the 30 bowls should be bisquing tonight. What a month it has been! Raku soon - anyone who wants to come to the firing should speak up now. Unfortunately, writing a final paper and preparing to run the Indy Mini Marathon. And I think some new sculptures are imminent. Friday, April 20, 2012. Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

My work is concerned with narrative, its varied forms and rhetorics. I attempt to create fictional narratives and present them as verifiable truths, questioning the nature of both fact and fiction and drawing the viewer's attention to the line at which they meet.". Wednesday, September 14, 2011. You're studying. Folklore? I'm much more of a get-your-hands-dirty, art for the common people kind of gal. There is a certain mindset out there in the fine arts, with the ridiculous high prices and the art critics full of so much hot air, that I just can't quite get behind. I want to study raku, I want to study art, I want to study artists! And I think now, when I say I'm studying folklore, this is the exact same disconnect my family and friends and coworkers have been expe...
