John on the Ice: Thank you, Google Voice!
http://johnontheice.blogspot.com/2011/09/thank-you-google-voice.html
John on the Ice. Monday, September 12, 2011. Thank you, Google Voice! John called the other day from McMurdo - and it didnt cost him anything! Which probably documents what is tribal knowledge among everyone on the ice. Work: hes been alternating between dining hall duty and washing dishes, putting in 10 hour shifts, 6 days a week. It sounds like there may be other assignments he can take on as well - Im waiting to hear more. One thing about John: hes never been afraid of hard work.

John on the Ice: (Late) Thanksgiving update
http://johnontheice.blogspot.com/2011/12/thanksgiving-update.html
John on the Ice. Sunday, December 11, 2011. Okay, I'm a little late in posting this, but we did hear from John on Thanksgiving day - a nice treat! They are a day ahead of us (and 7 hours earlier), so it was actually Friday. However they had not celebrated their Thanksgiving yet - according to him, all holidays are observed on Sundays. At McMurdo is named for the downed aircraft. Here's he and his cohorts climbing on the now-partially buried Pegasus:. Here's another view of the Pegasus.

John on the Ice: August 2011
http://johnontheice.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
John on the Ice. Wednesday, August 31, 2011. On the ice.at last. I got a quick email from John today- it's his one day off. So he's been at McMurdo for five days (or six.the International Dateline plays hob with my ability to keep track). He was part of the Winfly. Winter Flight - the flights to McMurdo after the end of the winter season, before the MainBody. By the way, I ran across a glossary of Antarctica slang. Saturday, August 27, 2011. The Penguin has landed! Got up this morning at around 7 and as ...

John on the Ice: February 2012
http://johnontheice.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
John on the Ice. Saturday, February 25, 2012. The Penguin is Off the Ice! It's official - as summer turns to fall, John's 6 month tenure at McMurdo station has officially ended. He's now back in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he's going to take a leisurely and circuitous journey back to Texas, and then return to Toronto. In the final weeks before departing, he and his cohorts had a picnic, saw penguins, and got ready to be redeployed. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Links of possible interest.

John on the Ice: September 2011
http://johnontheice.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
John on the Ice. Saturday, September 24, 2011. Life in McMurdo (short documentary). While browsing around on YouTube, looking for Antarctica-related stuff, I ran across the following short (8 minute) documentary about life in McMurdo, made about a year ago. You get a pretty good idea of some aspects of life down there, as well as a chance to see the sort of folks who choose to do this. There are several shots of the cafeteria and kitchen (where John's working), as well as shots of the grounds. Enjoy.

Tuesday, May 05, 2015. PaaS on the Cheap. PaaS stands for "Platform as a Service;" it's one of several classes of cloud computing services. Compare this to Iaas (Infrastructure as a Service), SaaS (Software as a Service), DBaas (Database as a Service) and CFaaS (cluster.well you get the idea). This list was thrown together quickly, mostly so I didn't have to bookmark all these and remember the details. I went over some of these when I wrote about cloud services in general. And now, in no particular order.

Journal of Post-Ralphaelite Thought: I was going to write something political...
http://postralphaelite.blogspot.com/2014/09/i-was-going-to-write-something-political.html
Monday, September 22, 2014. I was going to write something political. But then I saw this on my Google feed and thought about my old friend, The Whited Sepulchre, who loves weiner dogs. After watching it, I decided the world would be a better place if we all talked less about politics and did this instead. Enjoythere's time enough for arguing later. Posted by Dr Ralph. Tuesday, September 30, 2014. The tale of my iPhone 5 battery. When it came time to upgrade my old iPhone 3GS a couple of years ago, I wavered between the new iPhone 5 and some flavor of Android phone. For a variety of reasons, not all very well thought out, I ended up with the iPhone 5. I had an iPad, and a small investment in apps, so it seemed the way to go. Miscalibration," was the term I saw bandied about. I tried backing up my phone and restoring it. All of my family got tired of hearing me bitch.

Journal of Post-Ralphaelite Thought: A minor epiphany, and a long overdue update
http://postralphaelite.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-minor-epiphany-and-long-overdue-update.html
Friday, March 27, 2015. A minor epiphany, and a long overdue update. Well, its been a while. Life here at Sisyphean Corp has always been a grind, but in the past it always had a modicum of amusement value, as well as the opportunity to do slightly interesting things with the support of a string of pretty good supervisors. I worked hard and had fun. That changed about a year ago. January 2, 2014, I had a new boss. It didnt take me long to figure out the good times were over. I did a painting workshop back...
