Hiking at Gunsight Rock | Ramblin' Robert
https://ramblinrobert.wordpress.com/2012/03/31/hiking-at-gunsight-rock
About ramblin’ and Robert. March 31, 2012. Hiking at Gunsight Rock. I started hearing about Gunsight Rock at Hood Mountain. But, a really cool discovery was a kind of wildflower that I’ve never seen before. Common name is Indian Warrior. And it is a beauty! Interestingly, it is a hemiparasite, meaning it can grow on its own but will opportunistically parasatize the roots of some plants. One of those plants is manzanita. Posted in Bay Area. About ramblin’ and Robert. In April 2009 I spent a week exploring in North Carolina. A few friends dropped in while I was in Asheville and we toured the Biltmore Estate, where I took this picture in one of the many gardens. I’ve been exploring the North Bay area of Napa and Sonoma Counties lately, and have been enjoying springtime in the vineyards. This photo was taken in March 2010 on Highway 12, between Petaluma and Napa. Linda Flanagan (Isabel’s friend:). On March 19, 2010 at 4:52 pm. My legs haven...
A bit of East Bay history | Ramblin' Robert
https://ramblinrobert.wordpress.com/2010/08/08/a-bit-of-east-bay-history
About ramblin’ and Robert. August 8, 2010. A bit of East Bay history. One of the things with which we in the East Bay are blessed is a very large regional park system. I had the chance this weekend to visit one of the newer parks, Pleasanton Ridge. For the first time. This area has quite a bit of colorful history. I first started bicycle riding through the area about 30 years ago, sometimes passing through Sunol. Is the Sunol Water Temple. Part of San Francisco Water Department. In Edible East Bay. You a...

My garden | Urban Agroecology

Good dirt, good food, good people. The other pages, about the what, why and how of urgan agroecology, are pretty theoretical. In this section, I will accumulate pages about my personal experiences in my own garden. Since I already have detailed blog posts about this topic in the My garden, my life. Category, the pages here provide summaries and lists that don’t lend themselves to blog posts. A listing of my annual crops that I’ve eaten from my yard, by year. Saving Water, 2009. Good dirt, good food, good people. So, learn about ecosystems in general, then study a particular ecosystem that you are interested in to learn its key components that must be managed. This information is found in the following Ecology section. Below that is another section on dealing with specific constraints often faced by urban gardeners and farmers. Under individual topics I highlight important resources available to help you better understand those topics. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Get every new p...
The why | Urban Agroecology
https://urbanagroecology.org/the-why
Good dirt, good food, good people. Why practice urban agroecology? In a nutshell, this website’s slogan of “good dirt, good food, good people” says it all. Let’s take this apart a little bit to better understand the importance of urban agroecology. But, why is good dirt, that is, soil, important? Because healthy soil means healthy plants. And healthy plants mean better resistance to pests, better water retention, better nutrient release and, in the end, tastier and more nutritious food. You are commentin...
October | 2013 | Urban Agroecology
https://urbanagroecology.org/2013/10
Good dirt, good food, good people. October 18, 2013. Posted by ramblinrobert under My garden, my life. After 25 years living in my home in Oakland and 15 years of building a mini-farm and gardening in my backyard, this was one-half of my final harvest. (The other half was given to a friend, of course.) As I write this from Grass Valley, I’m eating the squash and tomatoes shown in the photo, part of a favorite summer salad. (more…). Garden salads coming to an end as summer ends. It’s tomato season!

Good dirt, good food, good people. What is urban agroecology? First of all, what is urban? In short, anything not on a farm in the country. So, urban might be in a city, a suburb or a small town. Academics like the phrase “urban and peri-urban” to get across the idea that urban agriculture occurs not just in inner cities but also in surrounding areas. Most people who practice urban agriculture. Do so using methods consistent with agroecology. Urban agroecology vs. industrial agriculture. More articles ab...
