Ramping Up the Garden. Getting serious about food security. Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Anyone still out there? To all the folks that used to follow this blog (if anyone still has me in their feed reader) - I am starting a new blog. Probably not so different from the old one. Still food, gardening, preparedness, thrifting, household craziness. Lots of new stuff to talk about. Feel free to add me to your readers at: City Peasant. Sunday, July 26, 2009. Ramping Up the Garden: Independence Challenge - Six Month Anniversary

http://rampingup.blogspot.com/2008/10/independence-challenge-six-month.html

Ramping Up the Garden. Getting serious about food security. Friday, October 31, 2008. Independence Challenge - Six Month Anniversary. These self-sown petunias just keep blooming through the freezing nights. Happy anniversary to me! I can't believe it has been six months. Since I started the Independence Challenge! What a difference it made. The world has changed, too - or at least, the problems that worried us have now become more visible to everyone. We have more than 3 months of food stored. With an in...

Ramping Up the Garden. Getting serious about food security. Sunday, July 26, 2009. Independence Challenge - July '09. Whew Mom spent another week in the hospital after a string of "episodes" that culminated in what looked like a big TIA in the doorway of her doctor's office. After a lot of testing, they basically don't know what is wrong, but it's probably not more TIAs. It might just be the blood pressure meds. We eat in more variety. We can afford more than the cheapest protein. I can afford so...It's ...

Ramping Up the Garden: Salt-Tolerant Perennials

http://rampingup.blogspot.com/2008/05/salt-resistant-perennials.html

Ramping Up the Garden. Getting serious about food security. Thursday, May 22, 2008. When you live in the city, your front yard plantings tend to get salted every winter. City salt trucks spray the streets, and then the salty snow gets plowed and shoveled up onto the sidewalks and into planting areas. So even if you don't personally use salt as an ice-melter, your plants get exposed. I compiled a list of salt-tolerant plants, from multiple online sources and our own experience:. Erynigum planum (Sea Holly).

Ramping Up the Garden: An Update from the Trenches

http://rampingup.blogspot.com/2009/07/update-from-trenches.html

Ramping Up the Garden. Getting serious about food security. Monday, July 13, 2009. An Update from the Trenches. I've been quiet, blog-wise, for a long time, but busy "off screen.". On top of her cognitive issues, Mom had a mini-stroke in June. She has recovered well, but now takes a lot more medications than she once did. Her license to drive has been taken, and her independence. Challenges and our various prepping activities. Jars, for instance. We've recycled vast amounts of saved glass and plastic...

Ramping Up the Garden: Independence Challenge - Year 2 - Week 2

http://rampingup.blogspot.com/2009/05/independence-challenge-year-2-week-2.html

Ramping Up the Garden. Getting serious about food security. Monday, May 11, 2009. Independence Challenge - Year 2 - Week 2. Saturday, DH and I went out and saw Star Trek. Followed by late lunch in a new Mexican place that we liked a lot, the Plaza Azteca near the Berkshire Mall. I had carnitas, and the roast pork was to-die-for. Nothing yet. The alley is full of shiny new plantain I could harvest for medical use, but I am restraining myself. Focus, focus, focus. But it got used pretty quickly. We continu...

Thoughts | Eat Persimmons!

https://eatpersimmons.wordpress.com/2010/12/10/thoughts

December 10, 2010 at 10:47 am. I’m finally done with Fall quarter! I still don’t really feel like I am on winter break. I don’t think I’ve ever studied so hard in academia like I did these past few months. Looking back, not only did I learn a lot from my classes but I also learned a lot outside of the classroom. There are a lot of urban farms and gardens in San Francsico! There are plenty here in Santa Cruz too. I think Santa Cruz should copy this idea and make a nifty map. Entry filed under: All. Like y...

Say Cheese! | Eat Persimmons!

https://eatpersimmons.wordpress.com/2010/08/28/say-cheese

August 28, 2010 at 8:18 pm. When I was in Costa Rica working at Finca La Flor de Paraiso in July, I was able to enjoy fresh goat’s milk and fresh goat cheese for the very first time in my life. Up until then, I had never seen a goat be milked in person and I also didn’t know what goat’s milk tasted like straight out of the udder. Goaty I mean, REALLY. Even so, I was so intrigued about the process I made sure I woke up at 6am every morning to watch Henry, one of the farm workers,. Aside from working at a ...

My Birthday Wish | Eat Persimmons!

https://eatpersimmons.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/my-birthday-wish

September 2, 2010 at 7:47 am. Hello friends in blog land! You might be anticipating a tale of the fig and goat cheese tart I mentioned in my last post. Well I will get to that soon enough but this is a more important issue that is very dear to my heart. My birthday is just a couple of weeks away. I feel very fortunate to have been able to reach this age in good health. As you all know, I’m pretty active.I ran my first marathon this year! Some of you may be familiar with La Milpa Organica Farm. After faci...

The Republicans. I do appreciate National Parks and saving farmland - so I venture that the Obama side is more favorable to my views on this. Use thrift stores, li...

I have read all the flurry of emails over this case in California. and I guess what I don't understand with this country is why do people feel that it is the Governments job to educate our children and not the parents?

Bought two even though it was toward the end of the afternoon and they were looking a bit sad and droopy. I learned something important. Always buy stuff from children!
