Travel with a Beveridge: A lucky soldier
http://scottbeveridge.blogspot.com/2009/10/lucky-soldier.html
A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Sunday, October 25, 2009. My father, James R. Beveridge of Charleroi, Pa., left, in Danville, Ill., with an unidentified pal shortly before embarking for Europe with the U.S. Army during World War II. Part 1: Preparing for a battle dad would never see. The Queen Elizabeth had the ability to outrun German U-boats during World War II, moving at a speed that qualified it as a troopship for American soldiers destined to reshape the globe. 8220;That ship was so fast it could m...

A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Monday, January 5, 2009. The gamble on Donora steel. Part III: The mill is sued over sickening smoke. Mamie C. Burkhardt didn’t immediately link the onset of her debilitating health problems to a zinc mill that fired up for the first time in 1915. Across the street from her house. She and her husband, Frank, reacted by becoming the first of many local people to sue the powerful American Steel and Wire Co. for damages its mill inflicted to their health and property. The fo...

A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Sunday, July 13, 2008. The gamble on Donora steel. Part IV: Dangerous jobs among deadly air. Steelworkers in America’s industrial heartland faced many dangers in the early 1900s before federal workplace safety laws. But those in Donora, Pa., would put themselves and their families at particular risk while living in the shadows of a putrid row of zinc smelters. Newspaper reported July 5, 1901. Thirty-year-old Roderick Hastie, a Scottish immigrant, was killed while he was u...
Travel with a Beveridge: Mount Zion Church Day 28
http://scottbeveridge.blogspot.com/2014/04/mount-zion-church-day-28.html
A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Monday, April 28, 2014. Mount Zion Church Day 28. There isn't any running water at the nearly forgotten Mount Zion Church or its cemetery in Nottingham Township, Pa., requiring mourners to bring their own to plant and refresh flowers on graves. The property along Cracker Jack Road doesn't even have a trash can, leaving the wind or human hand to toss to the side artificial graveyard decorations. This is how we live in rural southwestern Pennsylvania. Monday, April 28, 2014.
Travel with a Beveridge: Mount Zion Church Day 27

A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Sunday, April 27, 2014. Mount Zion Church Day 27. As Wednesday will bring an end to this 30-day photography project I think I'll miss these daily visits to the historic, closed Mount Zion Church in Nottingham Township, Pa. Today, I packed a short step ladder in my car in order to peek in that back window there, a photo of which was posted here. Sunday, April 27, 2014. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Travel with a Beveridge: A lucky soldier
http://scottbeveridge.blogspot.com/2009/12/lucky-soldier.html
A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Sunday, December 27, 2009. My father, James R. Beveridge, in the middle, celebrated with his steel mill buddies in Monessen, Pa, not long after returning to work after World War II ended. Part VI: The second war ends. James R. Beveridge was going to have plenty of time for reading or playing cards to tackle the boredom of a long ocean journey to the war in Japan. Meanwhile, the U.S. Army would be slow in returning to their homes such soldiers as my father who saw ...As a ...
Travel with a Beveridge: A lucky soldier
http://scottbeveridge.blogspot.com/2009/11/lucky-soldier_15.html
A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Sunday, November 15, 2009. Part III: Dad's friends and relatives weren't so lucky. The letters my father sent home from World War II were nowhere near as troubling at first blush as those he would read from friends and relatives who also were serving their country in battle. Those men were less inhibited to express the ugly side of a war that dad surely experienced, too, but would never discuss even until the day he died in 2007. Dad would end up faring better in the Army.
Travel with a Beveridge: A lucky soldier
http://scottbeveridge.blogspot.com/2009/11/lucky-soldier_30.html
A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Monday, November 30, 2009. A silly Christmas card James R. Beveridge received while serving in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps during World War II. Part V: On the edges of combat. My father arrived in Le Havre, France, during the second week of February 1945 with shattered nerves. His unit soon marched across a U.S.-secured Normandy as more than 1,200 Allied bombers raided central Berlin. Dad said he worried all along that he would soon be called into combat. Meanwhile,...
Travel with a Beveridge: The Gamble on Donora Steel
http://scottbeveridge.blogspot.com/2008/05/donora-where-smoke-meant-money.html
A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Saturday, May 31, 2008. The Gamble on Donora Steel. Part 1: A borough rises from hell’s bottoms. Greedy land speculators were quick to arrive at a new town named Donora alongside a sharp bend in the Monongahela River in 1901. Bidders camped overnight beside stakes marking vacant lots on farmland before the property auction began there at 10:30 am Sept. 10, 1901. They fog didn’t scare away an entrepreneur, William H. Donner, who was born in 1864 in Columbus, Ind&...Donner,...
Travel with a Beveridge: The gamble on Donora steel
http://scottbeveridge.blogspot.com/2008/09/false-hope-from-start-in-donora.html
A newspaper man adjusts his pen. Thursday, September 4, 2008. The gamble on Donora steel. The lighted smelters inside the Donora zinc works, circa 1915. (Photo courtesy of the Donora Historical Society). Part V: Big promises and pipe dreams. The infamous and deadly 1948 Donora smog forever be linked to a dirty zinc mill in the Pennsylvania borough became a taboo subject for decades around local dinner tables and town gatherings. Yet it would long remain a popular subject of discussion among researchers.

A Rainy Yet Amazing Wedding. July 22, 2015. This meant that we got to do a first look with the bride and groom. Now, this is something that is honestly done regularly in a lot of cities, and in other areas of the country, but I haven’t had the opportunity to experience it yet, so this was definitely a treat for me, and you can see in this little action sequence how fun it was for the bride and groom! This was seriously tons of fun for me and seems like it was fun for the couple as well! July 21, 2015.
