Random Fermentations: June 2014
http://www.randomfermentations.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
This is a humble blog about making wine, mead, cider, or whatever. Thursday, 26 June 2014. However much I like the peel and stick labels you can get for wine kits, it's much more fun to make your own. I like to employ children to help with this. They love it. First, ask the young person to draw something related to the type of beverage. When they finish, scan the image and then make up your label in Powerpoint by inserting the image and adding text. Resize the label and print! Tuesday, 24 June 2014.
Random Fermentations: April 2014
http://www.randomfermentations.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
This is a humble blog about making wine, mead, cider, or whatever. Monday, 28 April 2014. A wine kit comes with a very clear set of instructions. Generally, the instructions tell you to perform the primary fermentation in a large plastic pail. I have done this in the past, but this time I used a carboy with an air lock (Pic 1). Why? 1) All ready to start fermenting. Once the fermentation gets going, it's fun to just watch all the bubbles rising through the must (Pic 2). 3) Siphoning to a 2nd carboy.
Random Fermentations: Wine Kit: Johannisberg Riesling
http://www.randomfermentations.blogspot.com/2014/12/wine-kit-johannisberg-riesling.html
This is a humble blog about making wine, mead, cider, or whatever. Saturday, 20 December 2014. Wine Kit: Johannisberg Riesling. The last few months have been awfully busy at work and at home, and I have not had the time or energy for my fermentation hobby. For almost 3 months, a CellarCraft Sterling Johannisberg Riesling kit has been sitting in my basement, waiting for me to open it. Today, I started it. The fermentation. Why is this done? Because the bentonite clay particles, which are negatively charge...
Random Fermentations: To Filter or Not?
http://www.randomfermentations.blogspot.com/2014/09/to-filter-or-not.html
This is a humble blog about making wine, mead, cider, or whatever. Monday, 22 September 2014. To Filter or Not? My valpolicella wine had been sitting for some time after clarification, and there was an inch of precipitate at the bottom of the carboy. So, before starting, I racked the wine into a clean carboy. This way, I didn't have to worry about the fine solids clogging up the filter pads. I noticed that the racked wine was already pretty clear. 30 bottles of filtered Valpolicella. Filtration seems lik...
Random Fermentations: Dragon Blood Trial & Error
http://www.randomfermentations.blogspot.com/2015/07/dragon-blood-trial-error.html
This is a humble blog about making wine, mead, cider, or whatever. Sunday, 12 July 2015. Dragon Blood Trial and Error. Back on May 21, I racked my first batch of Dragon Blood and did a taste test. My notes say everything that needs to be said:. Dry, slightly acidic, and the taste was like diesel. There is something in it that doesn't taste right. Perhaps one of the fruit components like pomegranate or cherry? Dragon Blood v.2. 3 gallons distilled water. 17 cups granulated sugar. 1 tsp peptic enzyme.

Gardening with Jess: March 2015
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Sunday, March 29, 2015. Wine, onions and a bird's nest. Well, between cycling and shovelling, March got away on us! We start a Merlot-Cab-Shiraz wine a few weeks back and it is now racked off for the secondary ferment. Jess was quite excited to stir in the oak chips. I had initially thought they were a nodding onion but the seed head (which comes in full and purple) is wrong. Maybe they are a Geyer's onion? Sunday, March 8, 2015. While there is still 18 inc...

Gardening with Jess: The bees!
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-bees.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Friday, August 14, 2015. I've got some sort of bee obsession going this year. Maybe it is that I have my camera/phone on me all the time and simply catch more shots of bees? The fellow above was struggling to get airborne off the dirt. So I picked some yarrow and enticed him (her? Onto it them held it up in the wind And off he flew, letter me get a nice shot of him launching. This was a huge bee- easily the side of the first phalange of my thumb. Bob Barnet...

Gardening with Jess: Jasper community garden
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015/08/jasper-community-garden.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. There is lots to see in Jasper, but one of my favourite stops is their community garden. It is located just up the street from the train station and has gorgeous views of the mountains. The garden is surrounded by an elk fence (the challenges of mountain gardening! The diversity of vegetables and flowers is pretty amazing, especially given the shorter growing season and space constraints. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lancem...

Gardening with Jess: Raspberries, beets, zucchini and peas
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015/07/raspberries-beets-zucchini-and-peas.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Saturday, July 18, 2015. Raspberries, beets, zucchini and peas. Jess was in a camp this week so I sent a fair bit of time in the kitchen. Raspberry season is upon us (about three weeks early). I picked about a litre over the past few days. You can see the nasty thorns on the black raspberry if you click on the picture and see the larger version. We harvested most of the first flush of peas and I blanched and froze them for Christmas dinner. Saskatoons, rasp...

Gardening with Jess: May 2015
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Friday, May 29, 2015. The end of May has brought out a host of blooms, from chives to lilacs. I don't now if has been the drought or the heat, but the flowering trees and bushes have been pretty spectacular this spring. The perennials in the front yard have also been really blooming. This phlox is beautiful and the early irises are booming in behind. The pole and bushes beans are also up and about. I was a bit concerned the bush bean seed was bad but th...

Gardening with Jess: July 2014
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Saturday, July 26, 2014. Baneberry, Dill and Onions. Jess and I took a wander in the valley between rain storms and ran across a bunch of interesting plants. I've no idea what this flower is- it grew tall (like a hollyhock) but the flower looks different. It was an isolated specimen so may be bird dropped. The fruit forest that was planted is amazing in its scope when viewed from above. There has to be almost 1000 plants involved. Wednesday, July 23, 2014.

Gardening with Jess: Raspberries, tomatoes and sunflowers
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015/07/raspberries-tomatoes-and-sunflowers.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Friday, July 24, 2015. Raspberries, tomatoes and sunflowers. Jess and I went out to Roy's Raspberries to pick this week. It was a beautiful day. Alas, Jess was bushed from an all-day birthday pool party on Monday and wasn't much of a picker ("This would go faster if you picked some berries." "Oh, right. Sorry."). There are lots of small cherry tomatoes (in red and yellow) that should be good to pick shortly. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Honoured to b...

Gardening with Jess: August 2014
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Sunday, August 31, 2014. Apples, pole beans, hawthorns and acorns. The firsts half of the long weekend has been pretty busy! Friday night, Jess and I went and did a big apple pick. There were so many apples, we ran out of containers and I ended up leaving a few that I could have gotten on the tree. So some apples were in the oven within an hour of being picked. The rest of the garden has been pretty relentless. The pole beans are ready! Poking around, we al...

Gardening with Jess: Zucchini season means salsa
http://gardeningwithjess.blogspot.com/2015/08/zucchini-season-means-salsa.html
Backyard food and flowers in Edmonton, Alberta. Saturday, August 1, 2015. Zucchini season means salsa. We took a short vacation to Jasper. While we were away, the zucchini plants suddenly started producing huge fruits! The one pictured below is resting on a four-inch fence board.). We pulls some walla walla onions from the garden to go in. We'll make another batch later this summer when the tomatoes are ready. Jess also made some saskatoon-lemon-zucchini cakes (wow! I see someone (Jessica? Dropped a bean...

Random Projects, Ideas, and Stories Fermenting in Our Lives. About Biology and Natural History. Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Fee-fi-fo-fum: Chiggers in the Adirondacks. I remember as a child sometime back in the early 1950s coming back from an outing at Lake Bonaparte covered with mysterious bites. I was miserable, and my mother and the neighbors had no idea what had afflicted me. The best they could come up with was "it must be sand-fleas.". Any other experiences with chiggers in the North Country?
