Random Tangents: April 2007

http://www.randomtangent-inbhutan.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

And other adventures in the Land of the Thunder Dragon - Bhutan. Thursday, April 19, 2007. Going to visit the rural schools. This is our traffic jam on the way to Thimpu. We actually rounded the corner and the whole road was covered by fallen rock, so we got to sit there for an hour while it was cleared away. The first school we visited. First class, left side. And the right side. The next class I went into was even smaller. Phuntso talking on her cell phone, on the way to a village. It amazes me how...

And other adventures in the Land of the Thunder Dragon - Bhutan. Sunday, November 4, 2007. I have been a very lucky girl, staying in the guest house at the college. There has been a train of absolutely fabulous international guests that I have gotten to know. The most recent were two Australians, who I had a most hilarious time with. Robyn and Anne had organized a 5 day trek from Thimphu (the capital) to Paro, over all the mountains in between, and they invited me along. Yes, more prayer flags. Life is l...

And other adventures in the Land of the Thunder Dragon - Bhutan. Saturday, October 13, 2007. Biswakarma. the God of machinery. Little did I know there was a god of MACHINERY! Biswakarma. Actually one of the pantheon of Hindu gods, but well loved in Bhutan. Most people festoon their cars with streamers in honour of him (and to ask for a blessing) - often to the point that I seriously wonder about the safety of driving these vehicles! Monday, October 1, 2007. And right now there are lots of them - they're ...

And other adventures in the Land of the Thunder Dragon - Bhutan. Monday, November 5, 2007. Were not allowed to go near the main part of the monastery. Oh well! A Monk in front of one of the altars adorned with fruit. Sonam Choden and me! Here you can see the Je Khempo (under the yellow umbrella) beginning to make his way through the crowd, followed by the procession of monks. More of my students, sitting around. Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Ascent of the Kleine Matterhorn. Before we started the Haute Route, the guys and I spent a fun day of skiing at Zermatt. For fun, we made an "ascent" of the Kleine Matterhorn . The route to the summit is very challenging . you first have to take a lift up . Then, walk through a tunnel in the mountain . The crux of the route is the final pitch to the summit. Here, the team prepares to use extreme aid to get up the hard part:. The final snow slopes mean an easy final ascent:.

Guyz Blog: The Bike

http://guyzblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/bike.html

Thursday, August 27, 2009. Here it is, all decked out for a ride across the Himalaya:. The story of . "the bike" . For the Himalaya, the preferred ride is one that is robust and easily repairable. Although I've got two other mountain bikes, the fact that both of them are alumnimum frame (can't be welded in the field), have hydraulic disk brakes (I have no idea how to repair those! And shocks (something else to go wrong) meant that they weren't quite appropriate for a trip like this. Replaced one of the s...

Saturday, March 1, 2008. Must Read Article - The True Cost of the Iraq War. Here is an exceptional article from the Guardian Online:. The True Cost of War. The article is a review of the work of Joseph Stiglitz, a nobel prize winning economist who took a close look at the true cost of the war in Iraq. The true cost of the Iraq war, to the US economy alone, will be (conservatively) $3 trillion;. The Iraq war has already cost more than 12 years of war in Vietnam;. Friday, February 24, 2012. I've been trying to get a schedule put together for myself, as I tend to waste lots of time if I don't plot out my day in advance. At the moment, I find myself sitting with my laptop trying to conjure words to write. I am having quite a bit of difficulty, so I decided to blog rather than work on fiction at the moment. I know that I am mainly the one suffering from my depression and fixation on all things shitty in life, but I also know that it affects my family and close friend...
