Prince Edward Island, on the eastern coast of Canada, is a long way from Montana and it’s where James Haywood was born, in 1854. Once, Haywood was held captive in a cabin by Sioux Indians. The journals don’t give any other information about this, except to say that his captivity lasted only one day. But a couple years later, James married again, at age 57, to I...

The Range Riders Museum. The Range Riders Museum. The Range Riders Museum started in 1939 as one log building on the site of Fort Keogh, a former Army post founded by Col. Nelson A. Miles in 1876 in the wake of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, to prevent the Cheyenne and Sioux involved in the battle from escaping to Canada. It’s located on the south bank of the Yellowstone River at the mouth of the Tongue River. Dioramas about the railroad, the LO Ranch, Fort Keogh and the battle at Lame Deer, all with ...

The Range Riders Museum. Kirk and Lora Badgett. IT BEGAN with this photo. The Range Riders Museum. Newer posts →. One can see the photographs on the opposite wall of the memorial hall reflected in the photo of Jerome Haughian. The painted symbol is the brand of the ranch he and his brother Henry. Jerome loved trees and planted lots of them around the ranch. He also liked to read history. But my favorite part of the history was this wonderful description — which could be a concise guide for how to live well on a Montana ranch:. Tagged Irish in Montana. Matie and Morgan Eliott.

Starting over in Montana « RANGE RIDER STORIES

The Range Riders Museum. Starting over in Montana. Prince Edward Island, on the eastern coast of Canada, is a long way from Montana and it’s where James Haywood was born, in 1854. His cousin had come to Montana first and urged James to follow, for the work was plentiful. At 23, James Haywood arrived in Miles City by steamboat on the Yellowstone River. It was 1877 and he joined his cousin as a buffalo hunter, supplying meat to the army men stationed at Fort Keogh. Though there isn’t much detail in t...
