Appiah is one of the leading scholars in philosophy of race, and I hope we will find his book fascinating (Even fascinating enough to do the reading in a summer course! Identity statements are not, in general, supposed to be informative. If I point to the basketball in my office and say "That ball is that ball," I haven't said anything particularly interesting, to say the least. If a colleague walks up to me before a talk and asks whether I'm going to get a cup of coffee beforehand and I respond "Well I'm me.
