In which a modern family of four lives with WWII food rationing. Laquo; Dutch Baby! Ration points – how many do we get? October 13, 2009. When I first started this experiment, I assumed that ration points would be very straightforward. That each person would get a certain amount, each food would cost a certain amount, and that would be it. Oh man, was I wrong. There were red points, blue points, brown, green, and on and on. Some would expire and you’d have to change colors. 3 lbs cheese – 24 points.

Dutch Babies are fun because they rise up really high in the oven – kids get a kick out of watching them inflate. They begin to deflate right after they come out of the oven, though. This picture was taken about 30 seconds after the Dutch Baby came out, and it’s already sunk down a couple of inches:. 3 eggs, beaten. 2 T melted butter or margarine.

I have a lot to talk about – I’ll start with War Cake! I used a recipe from Grandma’s Wartime Kitchen. 2 cups packed light brown sugar. 4 tablespoons lard or vegetable shortening. 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon. 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves. 3 cups unsifted all-purpose flour. 2 teaspoons baking soda.
