Concerts

The concerts are free and feature both orchestras. The public is invited to attend these concerts and to enjoy the refreshments afterwards. The location is Eckstein Middle School, 3003 NE 75th St. If you enter through the main door you will easily find the auditorium. The Ravenna Second String Orchestra (Mondays) will begin on Sept. 12 and run through Dec. 5. The Ravenna String Orchestra (Wednesdays) will begin on Sept. 14 and run through Dec. 7 which is the concert date for both orchestras. Repertoire for the Monday orchestra (intermediate) will be Dvorak: Symphony No. 8, Finale,. Arr Dackow, Faure: Pie Jesu. From Requiem), arr. Meyer, Pancarowicz: Variations on a Famous Ode,. And Ravel: The Enchanted Garden. And Janacek: Andante from Suite for String Orchestra.

One day Lorraine (pictured left) and Judy walked their dogs around Green Lake. They discussed what they might do upon retirement. One idea was to lick envelopes; the other was to start a community orchestra. They chose the second alternative and began immediately. The conductor is Judy Drake who also plays violin. The co-director is Lorraine Hughes who plays piano and cello. Their bios have not been included here, but they are happy to talk about them. Seattle Parks and Recreation sponsors both orchestras.

It’s a little easier than the Ravenna String Orchestra. There are no auditions, and all ages are invited to join. We have fun while preparing for the short concerts at the end of the quarter.
