Revolution at Point Zero: Housework, Reproduction, and the Feminist Struggle. It is the demand by which our nature ends and our struggle begins because just to want wages for housework means to refuse that work as the expression of our nature. And therefore to refuse precisely the female role that capital has invented for us. Our aim is to be priceless, to price ourselves out of the market, for housework and factory work and office work to become “uneconomic.” (39). The Scramble for Africa. By contrast, ...

Marshall Berman | Quotations

https://rayuelaz.wordpress.com/2013/10/22/marshall-berman

All that is solid melts into air: the experience of modernity. Marx’s bourgeoisie moves within this tragic orbit. He places its underworld in a worldly context and shows how, in a million factories and mills, banks and exchanges, dark powers work in broad daylight, social forces are driven in dreadful directions by relentless market imperatives that not even the most powerful bourgeois can control. grief | Quotations

https://rayuelaz.wordpress.com/2013/10/18/grief

Most of us know, of course, that people feel sad when they grieve. But we know this as an abstract fact, a it of information. It is not until we actually experience a profound loss that we really know how intensely sadness can penetrate our being, how all- encompassing and bottomless it can seem. 26 (George Bonnano). 8230;he doesn’t know how huge and never-ending it is, the death of a parent. (161) (Russell T Davies). Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone. Silence the pianos and with muffled drum.

Eduardo Galeano | Quotations

https://rayuelaz.wordpress.com/2014/02/06/eduardo-galeano

The open veins of latin america. For those who see history as a competition, Latin America’s backwardness and poverty are merely the result of its failure. We lost; others won. But the winners happen to have won thanks to our losing: the history of Latin America’s underdevelopment is, as someone had said, is an integral part of world capitalism’s development. The strength of the imperialist system as a whole rests on the necessary inequality of its parts… (3). Thrown down on the day the Cuban Revolution ...

Piero Gleijeses | Quotations

https://rayuelaz.wordpress.com/2013/10/23/piero-gleijeses-2

Repression in Arbenz’s Guatemala began only in late May 1954, in dramatic circumstances brought about by the United States. (216). Hope was edged with fear. The Latin Americans were convinced that Washington was preparing to violate the principle of nonintervention. To American journalists, these fears were patently anachronistic: couldn’t the Latins see that since FDR, the United States had forsworn interference in the affairs of its sisters? They were stamped with a hammer and sickle. (318). Ever since...

Sherman Alexie | Quotations

https://rayuelaz.wordpress.com/2013/10/30/sherman-alexie

Watching PBS, it occurs. To me that I want to be. Yo Yo Ma’s cello. That I’m sexually attracted. To Yo Yo Ma? He’s cute and thin. Looks great in a tux,. And makes the big bucks,. But I long to be simultaneously. As strong and fragile. As the cello. I want to be. The union of fingertip. And string. I want less. To be a timorous human. To become a solid. Wooden thing, warm. To the touch but much. Alone in my case. I need. To flee the mystery. Of mortality and insanity. And become that space. Auden, W. H.

Doctor Who | Notes from nowhere

https://qwpoi.wordpress.com/2014/02/27/doctor-who

February 27, 2014 · 3:56 pm. Also, the Name of the Doctor had no resolution. Are we to just assume that once he found her in there (which apparently took no work at all), that they made it out alive? All that just to introduce the War Doctor? All that promise from the Library episode to this? Also, wasn’t it previously revealed during the Dalton episodes that Gallifrey and the Time Lords were not simply destroyed, but caught in a time lock? How is that any different from now? Catching up + Ursula K Leguin | Notes from nowhere

https://qwpoi.wordpress.com/2012/10/03/catching-up

October 3, 2012 · 11:17 pm. Catching up Ursula K Leguin. I have not updated this since March. As soon as I finish a book I feel compelled to write about it, but by the time I get to a computer, the impulse has usually been forgotten. Some quick notes. I finished Ursula K Leguin’s Earthsea series. The first two stories, while good, seemed to have something missing from her writing that made. The left hand of darkness. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. runaway | Notes from nowhere

https://qwpoi.wordpress.com/2012/10/03/runaway

Catching up Ursula K Leguin. October 3, 2012 · 11:24 pm. Runaway. Far and away my favorite Alice Munro thus far. The switching between perspectives and time in LeGuin’s Earthsea series really reminded me of how Alice Munro (in far fewer words) traveled the story of Juliet in her three separate stories. Out of the stories in this book, Passion is my favorite. The way she combines that curious awakening perceiving and understanding the deep depression that lay beneath a mild surface was really moving.

It’s just that the last few stories have fallen a bit shy of what I’ve come to expect from her. In. December 28, 2011 · 12:24 pm. Forgot how books are sometimes quick. Finished. Doctor Who →. February 25, 2014 · 10:06 pm. I’m a bit behind in my 2014 reading goals. There’s been a lot of thematic overlap in what I’ve read so far. What can be made of these connections? Are they indicative of something deeper, something more interesting than just a superficial passing resemblance? The woman mentions in passing that she and her husband divorced. One paragraph in a story about her childhood romance with Mike. In so many of these stories, the children / family / domestic life is often ...

Shattered Hope | Notes from nowhere

https://qwpoi.wordpress.com/2012/03/04/shattered-hope

Catching up Ursula K Leguin →. March 4, 2012 · 2:06 pm. Nearing the end of. Ugh Watching the US pressure on Guatemla ramp up, the blind belief that the US would retain some semblance of integrity, the utter complicity of the US media at the time, it really is heartbreaking. Also calls into question the strategy of seizing power. How the US and its methods are seen so much more clearly by the third world than by those who live inside the state. October 3, 2012 · 11:27 pm. I had listened to the New Yorker interview with the biographer earlier, and so I was a bit skeptical. There was something about his tone. But it was easily forgotten as I got to the more interesting parts of the book. It also made me feel like I want to read the Pale King. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.
