Copenhagen, Air Travel, and Tar Sands (and new year’s resolutions). December 30, 2009. Environment - Tar Sands. No-one should be surprised that the Copenhagen talks on climate change didn’t come up with an agreement. After a lot of talk, secret meetings, and deals we are no closer to the targets set in Kyoto in 1997. And although thousands of Canadians publicly demonstrated and signed petitions we were unsuccessful in urging the prime minister to champion our desire to address climate change. States that...

A blog on issues relating to the continued prosperity of our species on planet Earth. Are North American Automakers Ready for a New Paradigm? Clearly some kind of bailout is necessary to avert the economic and social crisis that could befall North American automakers, but will it be enough to get them on track? Can the same leadership that got them into their current position be trusted to bring them out of it? This entry was posted on Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 at 1:16 pm and is filed under Business.

A blog on issues relating to the continued prosperity of our species on planet Earth. Sustainable tea goes primetime. That it would begin certifying tea under its Lipton brands as sustainable through the Rainforest Alliance. Currently the Rainforest Alliance certifies coffee, bananas, citrus, cocoa, and flowers. The Unilever initiative underscores the importance for corporations to leverage NGO accountability and reputation, as well as the ability for corporations to help NGOs develop capacity. I guess m...

A blog on issues relating to the continued prosperity of our species on planet Earth. CFLs: Lighting the path to energy efficiency? Unless you’re a die hard canadian football fanatic, you probably know that CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lamp, and you may also know that around the world, governments are banking on this technology making our old incandescent lightbulbs a think of th past. Canada and Australia have both mandated a ban on incandescent light bulbs (by 2010 and 2012 respectively). As a si...

Egypt, Libya, Ivory Coast – Upside of Down. March 4, 2011. Like a bowling ball rolling ever faster down the lane, the wave of public protests against vicious dictatorships is sweeping across the poorest countries of the world with the United States weighing in with its own, albeit less violent mass movement in Wisconsin. A laundry-list type of notes from that book is found here. The central purpose of this book is to help us recognize the signs and prepare for breakdown in world peace and civil order.

Water Conservation – Take a sailor’s shower! | Edgymama

Water Conservation – Take a sailor’s shower! June 18, 2012. I’ve always loved water – not necessarily to swim in, though I like that too – but for the sheer joy of drinking it. My mother called me her water baby because it was (and still is) my drink of choice. I even remember as a little girl, marveling at our availability of water, pitying those in the desert without such easy access. Here’s what I did. 8216; estimate of 50-60 gallons of water for an average 10-minute shower. Let me know how you do!

A blog on issues relating to the continued prosperity of our species on planet Earth. David Suzuki at the Canadian Club of Toronto. Had the chance to listen to a Canadian environmental icon the other week, Dr. David Suzuki. It was a relatively swanked up affair, at the Sheraton downtown, everyone in suits (except Suzuki). They did serve certified organic salmon, and local vegetables for lunch however, making the event somewhat less incongruous with the theme. You can view the webcast of the speech here.
