Here in lies the problem. To top it off, the literacy level of adolescents entering into the adult world in the 21. Century will be greater than at any previous time in history. As Moore, Bean, BirdyShaw, and Rycik (1999) state, they will need advanced levels of literacy to perform their jobs, run their households, act as citizens, and conduct their personal lives. Thus, literacy and all that it entails is more than a matter of being educated. It is an issue of social justice (Alger, 2007).
