Real African Woman

Friday, August 24, 2007. This lady was in the field doing baseline survey for a couple of days! A van would take us there everyday to and fro where on the way we could see beautiful scenery, greenish which is rare to find in hot regions, you know when I saw lots of banana trees I thought am in Kilimanjaro or Arusha! This brought me back home! Now I asked myself a question, if people are growing banana why are they very expensive in the market? Development in rural setting. Monday, July 30, 2007. In the p...

Real African Woman: African Women and the modernizing world.

http://realafricanwoman.blogspot.com/2007/07/african-women-and-modernize-world.html

Friday, July 27, 2007. African Women and the modernizing world. In the process of modernization things have changed and there are ongoing changes. We are happy for the changes that yield good fruits. Leaving aside the way of dressing there are other things if they are not well thought-out will wipe out the identity and beauty of an African woman. Now it is so depressing to see fellow African women changing their skin colour so that they may look like mzungu! Can you imagine how would it look like? I agre...

Road to Zanzibar: Beauty and Pandemonium in Agra and Delhi

http://zanzibar-caitlin.blogspot.com/2008/04/beauty-and-pandemonium-in-agra-and.html

Tuesday, April 8, 2008. Beauty and Pandemonium in Agra and Delhi. Despite the fact that I like to consider myself a relatively seasoned traveler, I found Delhi quite stressful (though perhaps if I hadn't just come over here from eight months in Africa I would have found it less so). One major plus in Delhi was the metro system, which is very new, and rivals any of the European systems I've been in, though it's still quite small, as it's still being built. Road to Zanzibar: Bombay

http://zanzibar-caitlin.blogspot.com/2008/03/bombay.html

Thursday, March 27, 2008. Yesterday at 4am I landed in the biggest city in the world, which most people here still call Bombay (the less Anglicised name "Mumbai" was adopted a few years ago). My flights with Qatar Airways was pleasant, and my two hours in the airport in Doha were mostly occupied by me staring open-mouthed at the goods in the duty-free - there was just so. Glad it is 'cooler' there; you are going to freeze when you get back here! Insanely jealous of your trip. Love Mom xxoxx :-). There ar...

Road to Zanzibar: Pemba: Bumpy Roads, Octopus Curry, and Marriage Proposals

http://zanzibar-caitlin.blogspot.com/2007/10/pemba-bumpy-roads-octopus-curry-and.html

Wednesday, October 31, 2007. Pemba: Bumpy Roads, Octopus Curry, and Marriage Proposals. During my meal it started to rain torrentially. I waited out the downpour, and then I went for a stroll along a muddy road, chatting with fishermen and farmers, and attracting quite a bit of attention from children along the way. Thankfully, I didn’t slip and fall on the wet, clay road while gaping at the Eden-like countryside. Despite these grim warnings, I rented a bicycle on Sunday morning and headed out for the ea...

Road to Zanzibar: Race against Time

http://zanzibar-caitlin.blogspot.com/2008/03/race-against-time.html

Monday, March 17, 2008. I had intended to start writing blog entries about the books I’ve read here, but I haven’t had nearly as much time to read as I had anticipated. However, I did finally. Read Stephen Lewis’ Race against Time. If you have not yet read Race against Time. You are pretty eloquent yourself! Lewis is one of the good guys. March 17, 2008 at 4:54 PM. Road to Zanzibar: My First Car Chase

http://zanzibar-caitlin.blogspot.com/2007/11/my-first-car-chase.html

Wednesday, November 21, 2007. My First Car Chase. In Zanzibar there are police checkpoints along the major roads (all four of them) where daladalas are made to pull over and be checked out for "safety reasons." The driver is supposed to be wearing a seatbelt (a rule that is actually quite consistently obeyed), the daladala is not supposed to be overcrowded, and there might be a few other obscure rules. The driver floored it. We whizzed along the road, with amused passengers spot-checking for the cops...

Road to Zanzibar: Jaipur

http://zanzibar-caitlin.blogspot.com/2008/03/jaipur.html

Monday, March 31, 2008. Tomorrow evening we're taking another sleeper train to Agra, where the Taj Mahal is located. I very excited to see this monument, which everyone says absolutely lives up to its reputation. After that we'll head up to Delhi for a few days, after which I will take an overnight express back to Mumbai to catch my flight back to Dar es Salaam, which feels worlds away now. . Sounds wonderful; "tout" = 17th century (even earlier than I thought! Am not desperate to visit INdia! The intend...

Road to Zanzibar: Poverty

http://zanzibar-caitlin.blogspot.com/2007/10/poverty.html

Monday, October 29, 2007. A wrenching experience (even to read about), especially regarding the children. The photos seem to be of proud people, but beaten down. I said she was bound to shit at some point and the technician then broken into English (another anglo! And said she had already peed! This made my day. At first, I hardly noticed the cow (although my friend Jennifer certainly did): does this mean I have been living here waaaay too long? October 29, 2007 at 10:06 PM. October 29, 2007 at 10:34 PM.

Road to Zanzibar: Home!

http://zanzibar-caitlin.blogspot.com/2008/04/home.html

Saturday, April 12, 2008. After a four-day journey, I am finally. Back in Montreal, which, compared to Africa and India, is very chilly and grey - except for all the Habs flags! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). This blog was written while I was completing an internship with the Aga Khan Foundation Canada. Tanzania, between July 2007 and March 2008. As well as keeping this blog, I have posted photos from Zanzibar. And from my internship in the Dominican Republic. General Impressions and Culture. 8226; ...
