Real Food from a Small Island: Bittersweet September

http://www.realfoodfromasmallisland.com/2011/09/bittersweet-september.html

There were plenty of cheerful kids around, too. We fired up the oven for pizza and I taught a French friend's daughter how to make pate a choux. I didn't do much preserving this year but some gorgeous yellow plums from a neighbour's tree went into a dozen or so jars of plum and vanilla jam. I'm feeling energized and optimistic and looking forward to returning to blogging after a break of almost a year. La vita e veramente bella! Monday, September 19, 2011. Feed You can leave a response. Real Food from a Small Island: A Micaceous Clay Pot and Some Damn Good Beans

http://www.realfoodfromasmallisland.com/2011/10/micaceous-clay-pot-and-some-damn-good.html

A Micaceous Clay Pot and Some Damn Good Beans. Last September we took a trip to Santa Fe and I became obsessed with buying a micaceous clay pot. I had read an article about them in New Mexico. Finding an affordable pot, however, proved to be a challenge. Micaceous clay objects are not cheap and well-crafted pots usually start at around $100 per quart. I finally found a three-quart pot while browsing around the galleries and artist studios in Madrid, New Mexico, for about $150. Is not one of the herbs I g...

Real Food from a Small Island: August 2010

http://www.realfoodfromasmallisland.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

There are days when I feel like pinching myself - I'm so lucky to live in a place like this. I went to the market on Saturday with my camera and was thrilled to see so many people there. It was Wine Festival day and many people had arrived at the venue early to do some shopping before the serious drinking began. The balance between produce,. Saturday, August 14, 2010. One of our neighbours, the farmer who cultivated the fields behind the house, showed us a 400 year-old map that clearly depicted a thrivin...

Real Food from a Small Island: May 2009

The Zero Mile Diet Garden. For many years I just assumed that I had a brown thumb. Any attempt I made at gardening on the island always resulted in stunted plants, low yields, and heartache. That was until someone gave me a copy of Steve Solomon's Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades. Like most of our projects, the garden developed rather organically. We tied a rope around the tree and used it to help us lay out the triangular-shaped beds. We defined them with recycled brick from our former firepl...
