June 29, 2013. I did this project about a month or so ago. I took my old coffee table and painted it with one coat of chalk paint. Annie Sloan). You don’t have to sand away the previous finish (which in my case was clear coated, dark stained wood). I then lightly sanded the edges with 120 grit sandpaper.
