Completed for Word Image, Fall 2012. Laser printed, hand silkscreened, and coptic stitched. For this project, I chose the word "context" as my starting point and prompt. It was difficult working with such an abstract and relative term. I found inspiration in Chris Marker's work, Sans Soleil in particular, and decided that our own memories and experiences are our context, and they are absolutely relative to individuals and abstract to others. RMCD 1989 – 2016. Is a critique on the prevailing 15th century colonial attitude and in particular, its relation to the current geopolitics of the North Pole. The futile conquest of the North Pole by the artist herself also points to the ambivalence of the Mexican migrants’ ‘dream vs. reality’ experience in their journey to the United States for a better life.

Follows the migration of the arctic tern, a small sea bird that has the longest migration of all living beings on earth, flying from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back again each year.
