At the beginning of the semester, my professor told us wide-eyed, fresh-faced art students to keep a list of visually interesting objects and add to it each day. Many additions involved nature: "Extremely puffy, spherical sleeping bird"; "Pine needles stuck in holes of chain link fence, all blowing in the same direction in the wind.". Following the Life and Times of a University Drone. Saturday, September 25, 2010. Today I went apple pickin(g) for the first time ever, in the wilds of the middle of Massachusetts. Everything looked like it would in a hand-crafted postcard from Norman Rockwell. While driving past scattered colonial-style estates tucked into already-colorful trees, I even saw a tire swing in someone's front yard. And what could be more wholesome than apple picking? And a road trip in Autumn? Probably not. Lah-MIN-stah.

Contrary to a popular saying around here, the nice weather in Boston today stayed constant for a whopping couple of hours. It beckoned me outdoors. I followed. This couple seems to have had years of experience in the art of leisure- if there's any good place to smoke a cigar with your spouse in Boston, I'm sure the Charles River waterfront is it. Sunday, June 7, 2009. Have you ever been naming off a list of people and know that you have forgotten someone, but you can't remember who? I do that with my students all the time if I am trying to think of them all, it is inevitable that I will leave one of them off. I call this the "God bless Kurt effect" and if you can't figure out why, well, I'm not sure that we can be friends! It's ok, he ended up just being asleep in the corner a few feet off, but still, he seems to be living up to his name somehow!
