Rebecca Mallinson's blog

Saturday, 16 March 2013. 15 March – transferring between cultures and climates. After a very emotional couple of weeks of parties and partings, I finally left Sudan yesterday on a 6.30am flight. I was driven to the airport by Griselda’s driver and was immediately pounced on by a porter who helped me carry my large amount of luggage into the airport building. He asked where I was going and then delivered me to the correct window. Various staff came at intervals to ensure I got to the right departure gate.

Rebecca Mallinson's blog: September 2012

http://www.rebeccamallinson.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, 29 September 2012. Saturday 29th September – feeling more at home. I have had several emails from friends concerned about my various difficulties here in Ed Damer, particularly the water situation and lack of privacy. I am glad to say that after a couple of weeks, I am feeling far more settled. Guida, the headmaster’s wife, cadged an excellent plastic urn with a filter from a relative which now has pride of place in the teachers’ accommodation specially for my use. The house was Osman’s f...

Rebecca Mallinson's blog: 22nd February – reflections as the end approaches

http://www.rebeccamallinson.blogspot.com/2013/02/22nd-february-reflections-as-end.html

Friday, 22 February 2013. 22nd February – reflections as the end approaches. Break time at school. Things are winding down here as it is final exam time in schools. The first and second year students have annual exams. The third years have their final exams before leaving school, in some cases for university. The term ends in mid-March. This is only a rough date because the teachers and schools are incredibly vague about everything time-related, like everyone in Sudan. My flight leaves on 15. We went int...

Rebecca Mallinson's blog: Curse of the SPINE Books

http://www.rebeccamallinson.blogspot.com/2013/01/curse-of-spine-books.html

Friday, 4 January 2013. Curse of the SPINE Books. English is taught in Sudan using the world’s most boring textbook, entitled SPINE. It was seemingly produced to put the next generation off English and ensure that they will not have any speaking skills. Teachers are expected to rush through the chapters within times set by ‘supervisors’ (school inspectors) from the Ministry of Education, regardless of whether the students have understood anything or not. There is no oral section to the exams. It is one o...

Rebecca Mallinson's blog: January 2013

Saturday, 26 January 2013. 26th January – the band plays again. Last week Ali, the director of the Sudanese band I play with, said that we would be playing at a wedding this Saturday. He went on to say something about an American, which I didn’t understand. He asked me to arrive at our rehearsal room at 9am. I have put this into full sentences, but in fact Ali and I have a massive language barrier which is broken almost entirely by music. We stopped en route for ‘breakfast’ which the men ate ...Afterward...

The Beels in The Sudan: Our Permanent Home!

http://thebeelsinthesudan.blogspot.com/2012/09/our-permanent-home.html

The Beels in The Sudan. Our year long Sudan adventure as teachers of English in Government schools through the charity Sudan Volunteer Program. Wednesday, 26 September 2012. Proud owner of a book shelf. The walls were crusty brown before we scrubbed all day. Thrilled to have a wardrobe and to be able to unpack everything. Martin playing ghosties behind the mozzy net. But we are making it our own and are very happy to have unpacked finally after living out of suitcases since June 15. First Day at School.

The Beels in The Sudan. Our year long Sudan adventure as teachers of English in Government schools through the charity Sudan Volunteer Program. Monday, 17 September 2012. Or get those beers out of the fridge. I think I am sharing my crossness. I can’t explain it but I feel like showing off about it. I resent being unable to have even one cold beer. However, it’s like always being the designated driver and it is quite irritating. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). How long is a piece of string? T...

The Beels in The Sudan. Our year long Sudan adventure as teachers of English in Government schools through the charity Sudan Volunteer Program. Sunday, 16 September 2012. A Glimpse of Village Life. A painted gate is the only adornment form the outside of the houses. Rami one of the co-ordinators at SVP invited the new arrivals to stay in his village and visit the pyramids at Meroe (pronounced merrow-ay). Naturally we were very excited about this and said “YES PLEASE! The thing with these villages is that...

The Beels in The Sudan. Our year long Sudan adventure as teachers of English in Government schools through the charity Sudan Volunteer Program. Sunday, 26 August 2012. Coming into Land in Khartoum. We arrived at Khartoum at 18:30 and were met by Rami and taken by taxi to the SVP flat not too far from the airport. It was still very hot and we had to carry up the bags to the third floor – no lifts – which was a killer. We have been separated too which is a killer! It is really, really hot. So hot you d...

The Beels in The Sudan. Our year long Sudan adventure as teachers of English in Government schools through the charity Sudan Volunteer Program. Monday, 17 September 2012. On Covering Up 1. Wedding guests the day after we arrived in Khartoum. I am not a Muslim and my culture has a different dress code so what do I want to do? How do I want to dress? So, the same here. Why shouldn’t I wear a sleeveless top or even a short sleeved t-shirt? What is wrong with wearing a below the knee skirt? But one confusing...

The Beels in The Sudan. Our year long Sudan adventure as teachers of English in Government schools through the charity Sudan Volunteer Program. Saturday, 15 September 2012. The water here is never cold. It comes from a water tank on top of the building and depending on when in the day you shower it will range from tepid to hot. The best time for a cold shower is at 5 in the morning as this is the longest time the tank has not been exposed to the sun. The water is cool. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Beels in The Sudan. Our year long Sudan adventure as teachers of English in Government schools through the charity Sudan Volunteer Program. Monday, 17 September 2012. In sickness and in health. The fee for the doctor was 150 SDP which is about £19. So that was ok. But the meds were very expensive. The pharmacy wanted 50 SDP (£5.50) for 10 tablets and when I pulled a face she gave me some cheaper ones for 16 SDP (£2) Why not give me those ones first? No doubt. What a pisser. Not happy. This is my life...

This is my life. Blir mer sånt i morgon.

Rebecca Malmin's Blog. The thoughts and writings of Rebecca Malmin. April 26, 2012. As I was making dinner tonight, I was listening to some worship music and that list began to replay itself in my head. I suddenly realized that no one made me give up those things. We CHOSE to give them up. Why? Why would I not want to give those things up so that I can share the Love of God to the City of Baltimore? Anybody have time to wash my dishes? July 1, 2011. Dishes and laundry definitely a mundane task. Why?

Rebecca Malone Illustrates

Welcome to the brand-new blog of illustrator Rebecca Malone! Thursday, May 10, 2012. I just listened to an NPR Fresh Air interview that Terry Gross did w/Maurice Sendak on September 20th 2011 — wow — that's all I can say. here's the link. Monday, April 23, 2012. My Brain is Full. I spent the past three days at the New England Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators ( NESCBWI. And extremely motivating experience. Here is the image I submitted:. How do you use illustration to "keep it real"?
