Old Bones: November 2013

http://www.rebeccamdean.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 30, 2013. Why Do I/Don't I Blog? Over at Doug's Archaeology. Doug has started a blog carnival, leading up to the SAA's. I'm not going to the SAAs this year, but since I've recently returned to my blog, I thought this month's set of questions were particularly pertinent:. Why did you start a blog? Why are you still blogging? Why have you stopped blogging. Why did I start a blog:. The mis-use of anthropological data. To Expand my Community. Or how to structure an Intro. To "Find my Voice".

Old Bones: I gave my students the exam questions ahead of time, and their grades dropped (kind of)

http://www.rebeccamdean.blogspot.com/2014/02/i-gave-my-students-exam-questions-ahead.html

Wednesday, February 26, 2014. I gave my students the exam questions ahead of time, and their grades dropped (kind of). I chose a mixture of questions for the exam, including one essay. Compared to previous years, I noted three major changes in grade distributions, some of which I would have predicted, but others are.odd. More students got A's, and particularly high A's. Butfar more students failed the exam. I usually have around 10% of the class fail, this year it was nearly 20%! View my complete profile.

Old Bones: March 2014

Saturday, March 29, 2014. YA Fiction: Howl's Moving Castle. Another in my series of YA fiction reviews. Check out my list of warnings. From the first post. By Diana Wynne Jones. Published by Greenwillow, 1986. Was a particularly egregious example of that problem. The ending felt like a traditional wedding topper placed on a naked-mohawk-baby-carrot-jockey cake. Does she want to marry him? Age-appropriate for a 7 year old? Does the book reflect diversity in any way? Not really, unless you count the Welsh.

Old Bones: Calling out pseudo-science in the Star Tribune

http://www.rebeccamdean.blogspot.com/2014/03/calling-out-pseudo-science-in-star.html

Thursday, March 20, 2014. Calling out pseudo-science in the Star Tribune. Yesterday, our regional paper, the Star Tribune, published a profile of local celebrity Scott Wolter, under the unfortunate title, " A Real-Life Da Vinci Code. Wolter is best known in archaeological circles for his work on the Kensington Runestone. Wolter's other work is less benign. He's the host of America Unearthed. I wrote a letter to the editor expressing my dismay. I don't know if they will publish it. It could only b...We di...

Comps as Rite of Passage | Sam Grace

https://samanthalgrace.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/comps-as-rite-of-passage

Talks to imaginary anthropologists. March 14, 2013. Comps as Rite of Passage. I was planning on writing a follow up to my last post on comps* preparation tips. But there was really one one thing I wanted to say:. Try not to stress out. Maidenhood Ceremony, my favorite rite of passage yet. You can’t ever really be prepared. Some challenges aren’t that meaningful. The rite is actually for me. Even though other people are participating, helping, guiding, and ultimately judging me, the point is creating a ri...

Opal is for Outlining | Sam Grace

https://samanthalgrace.wordpress.com/2012/08/23/opal-is-for-outlining

Talks to imaginary anthropologists. August 23, 2012. Opal is for Outlining. I am a software evangelist. I admit it. I get super excited when I find something that works for me and become convinced that the life of almost everyone I know could be improved if they adopted the same thing. For that reason, I expect that this post on software will be only the second of many. This is a huge step up from just writing in a text file or a word document. A reading break from reading for anthropologists. You are co...

Online Discussion Pedagogy | Sam Grace

https://samanthalgrace.wordpress.com/2014/07/08/online-discussion-pedagogy

Talks to imaginary anthropologists. July 8, 2014. Thoughtful Discussion on the Internet. The reason I hate them is because I actually think that students CAN get something out of online discussions, but only if teachers stop thinking that the genre accomplishes the same goals as face to face conversation or even open-ended online discussion boards. And that’s not possible if you’re using the space as an easy place to post short answers worksheets. Most non-school online discussion boards have more lurker...

Talks to imaginary anthropologists. May 22, 2015. Dungeons and Dragons in the Present Continuous. But let me backtrack a little. If you’ve read my blog before you might be asking yourself, did Samgrace quit anthropology? What is this English class nonsense she’s talking about? Warriors can choose two of the following:. Steel Jacket (extra protection against terrible monsters). Lightning Pants (incredible speed in running and dodging). Warm Socks (magical protection against the cold). Solar Bracelet (a ma...

Grant-Writing Diary: an old school productivity app | Sam Grace

Talks to imaginary anthropologists. January 30, 2014. Grant-Writing Diary: an old school productivity app. There are a million apps out there to help keep you motivated and on track. To-do list managers like Wunderlist. To visualize what you need to do, and note-takers like Evernote. And throughout the day, whenever my inspiration flagged, I’d keep looking over at my day’s entry and know that I wasn’t working alone. It’s like the main conceit in Inkheart. In my dorky head, this is like the Stardate in th...

Talks to imaginary anthropologists. January 21, 2014. Scrivener: a grad student review. I made this from my NSF DDIG application! I just submitted an application to the NSF DDIG*. It’s a big grant and a big deal and getting it in makes me a very happy camper. I had already done a lot of writing for it in Word, which is where I had done all my grant writing previously. But I was feeling a definite need for a Fresh Start, and so I downloaded a trial version of Scrivener. The biggest disadvantages I have ru...

Papier Mache REBECCA MCQUOID

Welcome to my website, which gives you a taster of some of the work I have produced. I began in 1983 weaving tapestries on an upright scaffold loom. Over. The years I found that the long hours sitting at the loom would create a lot of shoulder and neck pain, which would then trigger a three day excruciating migraine. So I decided to change to painting at which I could stand or at least change position.
