Stronger After Stroke Blog (THE STROKE RECOVERY BLOG)

Saturday, July 25, 2015. There are 3 reasons drop-foot happens:. 1 Stroke is a brain injury. The brain injury no longer provides enough "brain power" to activate the muscle that lift the foot (tibialis anterior). 2 Survivors often have spasticity of the calf muscles. The job of the calf is to cause a "toe down" posture at the ankle. A spastic calf muscle is one that contracts too much, forcing the "toe down" position. 3 Because of both #1 and 2, above, there is often a contracture. Healing takes 6-8 weeks.

Stronger After Stroke Blog (THE STROKE RECOVERY BLOG): Spasticity After Stroke III: Options for Treatment

http://recoverfromstroke.blogspot.com/2014/08/spasticity-after-stroke-iii-options-for.html

Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Spasticity After Stroke III: Options for Treatment. The Holy Grail for spasticity reduction is a melding of doctor-prescribed medical interventions and therapist-delivered neuroplastic treatment options. The proper mix of these interventions is emerging as research goes forward. Guiding patients back to neurology and physiatry and accepting neuroplasticity as the substrate for authentic spasticity reduction are good first steps. August 26, 2014 at 9:26 PM. Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Spasticity I: The "Magic" "Cure" for Spasticity Reduction? Why do I have spasticity? What can I do to get rid of spasticity? When will it go away? Most clinicians provide patients with overly simplified, incomplete and often inaccurate information about what spasticity is, its etiology and its cure. Therapists generally believe that patients don't want detailed explanations. But patients need to understand their spasticity. Why? Spasticity II: The Explanation. Here is the story ...

Stronger After Stroke Blog (THE STROKE RECOVERY BLOG): Recovery depends on neuroplasticity? Yeah...not entirely.

http://recoverfromstroke.blogspot.com/2015/05/recovery-depends-on-neuroplasticity.html

Thursday, May 14, 2015. Recovery depends on neuroplasticity? There's this idea among many clinicians and survivors that when it comes to recovery it's all about neuroplasticity. Certainly, my book as well as many of my articles support this concept. But it's not 100% true. Some of recovery comes from stuff other than neuroplasticity. To explain this, let's nail down two things:. 1 What neuroplasticity is. During the chronic phase neuroplasticity is vitally important to recovery. It is only through fo...

Stroke Survivors Tattler: Fifty Shades of Shame

http://www.stroke-survivors.org/2015/08/fifty-shades-of-shame.html

Saturday and Wednesday News. Monday, August 03, 2015. Fifty Shades of Shame. August 3, 2015. I had an alarming message from a Twitter friend who explained her desperation and humiliation whilst aboard a cruise ship at the beginning of what was meant to be a lovely holiday. It did not begin well when the airline lost not only the couples luggage but also her Delta Walker for mobility. The one doesn’t care about causing stress, the other about humiliating their passengers. See the original article:. 9654; ...

Home After a Stroke. Work Smarter Instead of Harder. September 27, 2011. Getting to See My Family. I'm going on a ten day trip to see my brother Mark. We haven't seen each other for almost two years because the horrific snow storms last winter made it too difficult to travel at Christmas. He's looking forward to showing me his new boat and doing fun things together in Michigan. We keep in touch via e-mail and telephone, but I'm looking forward to seeing him in person and giving him a big hug. Im a little...
