By John Cowan cowan@ccil.org. I'm being laid off . So I'm looking for work. Recycled Knowledge: Concurrency vs. parallelism

http://recycledknowledge.blogspot.com/2012/04/concurrency-vs-parallelism.html

By John Cowan cowan@ccil.org. Concurrency vs. parallelism. Of which a shell pipeline is the most familiar example, is based on the concurrent execution of mostly isolated processes that communicate via flows. Because the individual components are isolated, they may be executed in parallel or not. Because there are no constraints on what components may do with their inputs, parallel execution may or may not actually speed up the computation. Juggling is completely deterministic. Can you define your terms?

Recycled Knowledge: The Nasochron

http://recycledknowledge.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-nasochron.html

By John Cowan cowan@ccil.org. Here is Christian Morgenstern's lovely poem "Das Nasobēm", which was written around 1895 and is usually called a nonsense poem, though not in the sense of "'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves ." Indeed, all the words in it make plain sense except one; the nonsense comes in from the fact that once you have read the poem, you still know nothing about the animal. Auf seinen Nasen schreitet. Striding on its noses. Einher das Nasobēm,. T here comes the Nasobame. There are said to...

By John Cowan cowan@ccil.org. US Moby Latin Keyboard for Windows. I'm announcing my U.S. Moby Latin keyboard driver. The keyboard is designed for people who use the regular U.S. keyboard heavily, but occasionally need to type other Latin letters (especially accented ones), symbols, and punctuation. In particular, the keyboard supports the Windows-1252 (U.S. and Western Europe) repertoire, as well as almost every Latin letter in Unicode. And the Benct X-Sampa keyboard. Use, share, and enjoy! Recycled Knowledge

http://recycledknowledge.blogspot.com/index.html

By John Cowan cowan@ccil.org. Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Links to this post. Getting sick and getting better. I will mostly state what happened to me in the order it happened. That I would not become dehydrated from the fever. Unfortunately, there were two mistakes here. One was that the positive result on the test was false, and therefore the penicillin was useless though harmless. The other was that because I had undergone roux-en-Y surgery. I hope I have been sufficiently clear in writin...

Plastic Sauce: July 2008

http://plastic-sauce.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

The stuff you dip socks in before slicing them up to make rubber bands (in case giants stomp on all the rubber band factories). Tuesday, July 15, 2008. Wow I just ran into a very very old friend, who I hadn't seen since high school. He's someone I parted with on a bad note, and one of the first things I did when we found each other again, was apologize. The funny thing was, he had no memory of the incident that I thought had driven us apart, and that had being bugging me for a quarter of a century.

The stuff you dip socks in before slicing them up to make rubber bands (in case giants stomp on all the rubber band factories). Tuesday, July 14, 2009. A frozen old friend. So I was just googling people I haven't seen in a long time, and I found an article about some friends of mine. Mary Margaret and Jim Glennie, who I knew when I was in college. Jim died of a brain tumor, and had his brain cryopreserved in hopes of reanimating it some day; and Mary Margaret is signed up for the same treatment.

The stuff you dip socks in before slicing them up to make rubber bands (in case giants stomp on all the rubber band factories). Monday, October 19, 2009. I'm trying a pumpkin liqueur - we ended up with a vast pumpkin from Gathering Together farms, and it's got to be et. I found this pumpkin liqueur recipe. And tried to follow it, but it makes all kinds of no sense:. How the heck much is 24 ounces of pumpkin? I chopped it raw and used 4 cups. Boil four cups of pumpkin in the juice of one lemon? The stuff you dip socks in before slicing them up to make rubber bands (in case giants stomp on all the rubber band factories). Sunday, November 23, 2008. A materialist argument for Intelligent Design. But I think there's an aspect of their argument that can't be rejected out of hand. Suppose you hand a responsible, honest specialist some item, and ask them, "Was this designed by an intelligent being, or did it come about through some non-intelligent process? Supposing you buy that, then why is it that t...
