Wearing the Inside Out: Take Back the Beep
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2009/07/take-back-beep.html
Thursday, July 30, 2009. Take Back the Beep. An open letter to AT&T rep, Mark Siegel, in response to David Pogue's " Take Back the Beep. Campaign. I sent this in an e-mail to Mr. Siegel at 6:57 pm today. As an iPhone user, I'm lucky. My voicemail greeting does not burden a caller with an inanely-long "after the beep" message. I realize I'm one of the lucky few, however, because I face this message every time I call someone else. It has to stop. And not just because of the cost to consumers. We're not lon...

Wearing the Inside Out: December 2008
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 24, 2008. So much for auld lange syne. Nothing says "cliche" like a list of New Year's resolutions. To avoid such a stigma, I've compiled a list of to-do items for 2009. RUN A REAL 5K. About a month ago, I took Planet Fitness. But now the pain seems to be gone. I stepped back in to the couch-to-5k plan. Winter is tough for everyone, and I always seem to gain a few pounds. Not this year. The ultimate goal will be to finally(! And you know what? LAUNCH NEWTON POETRY AS A SELF-HOSTED BLOG.

Wearing the Inside Out: April 2009
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 29, 2009. Now for something completely different. Next week, I face the first week-long vacation of my adult life where I have no plans. I've never taken time off from work and done. By "nothing" I mean no cross-country trip, of course. My first dose of vacation time took to me my first solo trip, a long weekend in Chicago, and from then on it's been 1,000 miles or more. It's the only way I know how to operate. Giant interstate (or inter-province) trip. Where do I want to live? My mom's ...

Wearing the Inside Out: Will work for Macs
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2009/07/will-work-for-macs.html
Thursday, July 16, 2009. Will work for Macs. For the third time in my life now, I've been directly involved in the purchase of a new Macintosh computer. The first was my first. An iBook G4 that still serves as my home base computer. The other was helping Katie buy an iMac. But this one, a 15" MacBook Pro. Is strictly professional. It's the result of our credit union's umbrella organization, the Jackson Co-Op. Taking a chance on my design skills and hiring me as a contract freelancer. My freelance work, i...

Wearing the Inside Out: June 2009
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 26, 2009. Devils in the details. This from Matt Taibbi, at his True Slant blog. On Fareed Zakarias's defense of capitalism as it stands. It may be the best way, but it's far from the. Way The chasing of money for the sake of greed alone is bound to produce criminals. Period. To say the system is flawed is an understatement, and one that we keep uttering to make ourselves feel better when this kind of thing happens from time to time. Tuesday, June 16, 2009. The best there ever will be. I watc...

Wearing the Inside Out: To Mac, or not to Mac
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2005/11/to-mac-or-not-to-mac.html
Wednesday, November 9, 2005. To Mac, or not to Mac. I'm thinking about it. Ever since I graduated I've wanted to invest in some sort of computer. A laptop, I figured, would give me greater flexibility - especially with all the traveling I do. Plus, with all the local coffee shops having wi-fi, I don't need a pokey phone line to do what I need online. But which way to go? A store-bought hunk of junk I can get for pretty cheap? Then I read an article. On the Mac Mini, a micro-Mac. Apple is doing well these...

Wearing the Inside Out: Fear & Loathing at Beer Fest 2009
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2009/07/fear-loathing-at-beer-fest-2009.html
Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Fear and Loathing at Beer Fest 2009. It's not hard to see why an idea like Beer Fest. Would be so popular. Take 8,000 drunks. Seclude them in a riverside park, isolate them on all sides, and turn them loose with thousands of kegs of beer. If that's not an American ideal, I don't know what is. Thanks to the Michigan Brewers Guild. You only live twice, and so Jessie and I headed down into the Huron River Valley to see what the fuss was about. The trouble was the timing. We arriv...

Wearing the Inside Out: On 'Into the Wild'
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2009/07/on-into-wild.html
Tuesday, July 7, 2009. On 'Into the Wild'. Americans can be placed in two diametrically-opposed camps: those whoe view Henry David Thoreau's experiment. Next to Walden Pond as a great idea, worthy of copying, and everyone else. Is enough conjure visions of daily journal entries, long walks in the isolated woods, and lots and lots of book reading. For that other group of Americans, Thoreau's experiment sounds like a trip into madness. Living alone in the woods? McCandless, if you're not familiar with the ...

Wearing the Inside Out: October 2008
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 31, 2008. On the American fork in the road. These things we know. Back in 2000, as hard as it is to remember the world as it was then, none of this was probable, or even seemed possible. But here we are. Now we find ourselves at a spiritual fork in the road. Either we choose to, more or less, continue down the path we've been heading these past eight years, thanks to the man above; or we choose to try out something different, something new, and something - admittedly - untested. McCain is...

Wearing the Inside Out: On bird watching
http://davelawrence8.blogspot.com/2009/07/on-bird-watching.html
Monday, July 13, 2009. It's called " biophilia. Which means love of living things, and what helped thinkBuddha's author. Ponder the clamour of life helped me realize why I've grown so fond of birdwatching these past few years. A bird would make a song, and I would - for the first time - wonder where it came from, and from whom. Anymore, a beautiful birdsong is enough to make me stop what I'm doing and pay attention. It's profound. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). What am I doing? Follow me on Twitter.
