I bought my first sawmill in 1995, and before I knew it, it had taken over my life. I worked as a portable sawyer more or less full time for almost nine years, in Washington, Oregon and Northern California. Using some online tutorials, I figured out the basics of HTML, and we made a website for our sheep flock and other farm endeavors, and I also made a website that I still have in use, specialtywoods.net. A couple of years ago, I dug a little deeper into the capabilities of my webhosting service and installed a Wordpress blog here.

Red Alder Ranch is owned and operated by Mark Whitaker. I have 15 acres of land in the Willapa Hills of Washington State, a few miles away from the Columbia River. Like a lot of people in this rural county, I have several jobs. I have been running a Wood-Mizer portable sawmill since 1995, milling wood of all kinds from old growth cedar logs salvaged from the river to fruit trees that have been removed from people's yards and everything in between. I'm also a co-owner of Columbia River Kayaking, LLC.

I've been interested in solar electricity since I was a teenager. In 1994, I put together a small photovoltaic system on the roof of my house in Portland, Oregon, and used it to run one room of my house. I wrote an article about it for Home Power magazine.
