Last Sunday after our gathering, as we were all milling about afterglowing, our little guy Brennan discovered the joys of a live microphone and began doing what he does best– talking. 8221; At that point he walked off the stage, but then came running back a few seconds later to say, “ Amen. When our children speak, we smile and nod and think “ how cute. 8221; or “ how touching. 8230;and he strings them together with… real, conversation, alive, thank you. He knows these sounds point to something central, ...

The Law. Did you know that the Hebrew word torah, which was translated into the Greek as nomos (custom, law, convention) and then into English as law, really means instruction, guidance, or teaching? It is really the teaching or guidance of Moses, and not the law, that we are dealing with here. And that can make a lot of difference in our thinking. Because even tax collectors do the same! 8221; (here for more). That the oral tradition did not have the force of Torah. Its all here in Jesus’ vision a...

Some songs are pretty much perfect. Turn down the lights, turn down the bed, turn down these voices inside my head. Smiling through the windshield at half-remembered pain, toothless now, as her voice rises. I can’t make you love me if you don’t; you can’t make your heart feel something it won’t. How do love relationships ever even get a chance? How among the thousands of faces you see every day, do you find one you realize you can love, which also among those thousands of faces, finds yours and. And so I...

Another email thread, another peek behind the curtain to see what may be relevant. 6/2/15, 5:52 AM. DM: Have you ever taken a side street on your journey? I have done so and it is turning out to be quite the cul-de-sac, and it has actually taken me quite a while to get back to the main path. I guess the way to describe my detour up the side street would be discouragement. 6/3/15, 1:34 PM. 8230;we sing these songs so flippantly without realizing that we could actually experience them. Watching over a baby...

words without edges |

When you think about it, the only way we can distinguish something visually is by its edges. We see the edges that outline, define, limit, separate one thing from another. Without edges, how could we say we are seeing anything at all? Infinitely loving Father living among our moments. If the message accurately reflects that Father and that love, it must be made of words. Without limit. There is something beautifully disturbing about Jesus’ teaching. Beautiful because it hunkers right down at the ...Feari...

If someone asked you to sum up the teachings of Jesus, could you do it? If you were asked to name one key concept that encapsulated all of Jesus’ message, could you do that? If you ask the average Christian what the Kingdom of Heaven (to use Matthew’s version) is, you’ll most likely get the answer “heaven,” as in the place we go after death. After all, it is called the Kingdom of Heaven, right? Why would Matthew call it the Kingdom of Heaven, but Mark, Luke and John call it the Kingdom of God? Now just t...

Mostly, messengers should be much less important than messages. Writers shouldn’t be seen peeking around stage curtains, breaking character, intruding into content flow. But here in these often subjective areas of spirituality, you might want to know more about who you’re dealing with in these pages. In Orange County, CA. I’m currently the teaching pastor for theeffect. A non-profit organization working to feed and educate underserved children in Mexico and the U.S. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window).

I remember the first time I saw Sheba. But anyway, he said it was all paid for and he’d just have to take it back to the pound unless maybe someone wanted it and then he wouldn’t have to, and then after his wife was better, he could get another one for her. But he didn’t have to do that either, because after his wife got better she got a baby instead and didn’t need a puppy anymore. We got to keep the bag too.
