Searching for Primordial Structure. X-rays from galaxy clusters. My PhD work is based on measurements of, or at least limits on, the radio emission from neutral hydrogen in the Era of Reionization (EoR). This is when the first stars were forming, and the Universe was not yet full of galaxies — instead there were primordial hydrogen clouds making up much of space. I work as part of the PAPER/HERA. A lot of things on the go. I am:. Searching for supernova remnants in the southern galactic plane. Engaging w...

The Universe, in Theory: August 2012
http://astrokatie.blogspot.com/2012/08
The Universe, in Theory. I'm a theoretical astrophysicist. I'm pretty sure most of this stuff is true. Friday, August 31, 2012. The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Cosmos. This post is adapted from a longer, more rambling, and somewhat more technical post I wrote for a group blog, here. There have been a few truly transitional moments in the history of the Universe in which something fundamental about the cosmic environment changed. Some of these - the beginning and end of cosmic inflation. Timeline of the Uni...

New Paper: X-ray Binaries during Reionization. Last week, we published a paper. Led by Arpan Das. At the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy, on high mass X-ray binaries and their impact on the 21-cm signal during cosmic reionization. Here we used the “Birth of a Galaxy” simulations. New Paper: Mocking the First Galaxies for JWST. Launches in...
