The Reluctant Anthropologist

Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Kids, Character, and Gender. An essay on kids, character, and gender. By Elizabeth Marino, Ph.D. The gender-focused, hyper-reductionist explanation for behavior also, I think, predisposes our kids for eventually defining themselves as the face-book friendly, easily digestible, stock character ‘type of girls’ that seems so common these days. Wednesday, May 5, 2010. I am nervous now! There is much to do. There is the uncertainty about what the next month of pregnancy will be lik...

The Reluctant Anthropologist: The Universalists and a case for culture

http://reluctantanthropologist.blogspot.com/2010/02/universalists-and-case-for-culture.html

Tuesday, February 23, 2010. The Universalists and a case for culture. I was traveling around Europe by myself, as I have been wont to do for the last six or seven years; either because a) I had made a little bit of money or b) because work had sent me across the Atlantic and I was able to squeeze in a week or three of vacation time at the tail end. Then the mother chimed in with a version of this conversation. You know," she said ominously, "they didn't use a top sheet.". At this, Jeri resumed talking ab...

The Reluctant Anthropologist: April 2010

http://reluctantanthropologist.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 12, 2010. So, the reluctant anthropologist has officially morphed into the pregnant anthropologist. I am swelling with baby, dreaming of baby, conflicted about safety decisions (is it safe to downhill ski, try the wine, climb the ladder, drink the water? And eating chocolate malts daily. The first steps, I think, to motherhood. But some basic instinct says, when it comes to carrying a baby,: phooey. Women around the world. I get it. For now I am trying to write, trying to get my head togeth...

The Reluctant Anthropologist: May 2010

http://reluctantanthropologist.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 5, 2010. I leave Fairbanks today for Nome, a brief overnight layover, and a quick 45 minute non-pressurized 7000 foot altitude (or so) flight into Shishmaref. The flight facts I have acquired since reading: 'pregnant women should avoid unpressurized airplanes.' The next advice, 'if you simply must fly in a non-pressurized aircraft, make sure there is oxygen on board.' There isn't. So it goes. I am nervous now! I brought a blanket and two bars of chocolate that say 'OREGON' on them. I am a ...

Stop and Smell the Lichen: March 2013

http://salmonberryblood.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Stop and Smell the Lichen. Follow me on Twitter. Friday, March 22, 2013. Yes it is that time of the year! The ptarmigan have blanketed our area heralding the coming of spring. Much more reliable than any ground hog. They usually show up right before the willow start to bud. Be aware that I don't really measure things so you will have to use a bit of common kitchen sense and adjust to your own tastes and requirements. 3-4 ptarmigan cleaned and cut into bit sized pieces. A few strips of really good bacon.

Please take a few moments to say a prayer for those that are impacted by the flooding of the small Alaskan town of Galena. We in Alaska are very tightly bound to each other and when nature causes tragedy we find a way to help each other out. This spring is bringing many natural disasters across America, but some are small and don't make the national news; though they are just as devastating. I fou...

Stop and Smell the Lichen. Follow me on Twitter. Saturday, February 23, 2013. What makes me Inupiaq? What makes me Inupiaq? I think about this question a lot. It is a key player in my inner battles of self doubt and identity. A weak brick in the foundations of Me. But is being Inupiaq just blood quantum? Inupiaq meant more than having just the blood quantum. But eventually I realized that this view was ever only created by me, this self flagellation. Are there different levels of being Inupiaq? Why are w...

The Holidays have rolled around and we are are pretty much relieved to see the cold weather show up and stay for good after the odd unseasonably warm and wet winter start. We finished the changes to make the coop more winter resistant and I thought I would post what I am doing in that department. Not to have to buy eggs anymore! I bought a microwav...

http://salmonberryblood.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Stop and Smell the Lichen. Follow me on Twitter. Thursday, August 29, 2013. We are busy busy busy, processing meat for the winter, picking berries and freezing them too, prepping the chicken coop, working on vehicles and basically running around babbling and surviving off off coffee and quick meals. They are also called salmonberries (though they are a different berry) or Akpiks in our language. This year was a good berry year! 4 cups of berries. 1/2 lemon or a couple of tablespoons* of lemon juice.

Thanks for visiting my web site and expressing an interest in my travels, I have been on my walkabout the past six years, the term ‘walkabout’ referring to my desire to travel without a set destination or time frame. The more common term perhaps is wanderlust. That's not to say that I don’t have some general guidelines for my travels. I have been visiting National and State Parks. From my book for you to get a taste of my travels. Thank you again for your interest and I look forward to hearing from you.
