Food, life, and adventure. One day, you’ll forget that you ever struggled with this. December 2, 2015. December 2, 2015. I’ve been practicing yoga more regularly as of late, and I’m on a mission to master arm balances and inversions (headstands and handstands). These poses rely on a lot more core and upper body strength than what I have now. Until one day, something that was once challenging becomes second nature. Ful Medames (Slow Cooked Fava Beans). Food, life, and adventure. Water Spinach with Sesame (芝麻空心菜). August 11, 2015. August 11, 2015. Water spinach was on sale last week, a whole bunch for less than $2! Water spinach is a popular vegetable in Asia. According to Wikipedia, it is known by many different names, including phak bung. The name for water spinach I am most familiar with is in Mandarin: 空心菜 ( pinyin. Which literally translates into “empty-hearted vegetable”, a reference to its hollow stem. Serves: 2-4 as a side dish. Food, life, and adventure. July 11, 2015. July 11, 2015. Some things in life are beyond description, like the shades of sky at sunset, smell of air after rain, or my first taste of coconut cream. Thicker than coconut milk, coconut cream is sensual, luxurious, and deeply satisfying. Make this curry as spicy as you can take it, or keep it mild to let the other flavours shine through. Let your taste buds guide your exploration of this dish and many more. 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight then boiled.

Food, life, and adventure. Dietetic Internship Weeks 35-39: Population and Public Health. July 6, 2015. I spent 4 weeks at the Burnaby Public Health Unit with my internship partner (we’re practically conjoined twins by this point). The focus of public health dietitians in Fraser Health is child health, specifically, children under the age of 5. Why young children, you ask? Part of the public health dietitian’s role is to be an educator and resource person for public health nurses. Unfortunately...One ini...

Food, life, and adventure. Pasta with Creamy Cheese Sauce and Poached Egg. July 14, 2015. July 14, 2015. The first time I tried to make a cheese sauce from scratch, it turned out to be a clumpy mess. Based on my experiences with making Kraft Dinner, I added grated cheese to hot milk and stirred, hoping that the sauce would thicken up. Guess what happened? Pasta with Creamy Cheese Sauce and Poached Egg. 2 tsp light-coloured vinegar (apple cider, white, or rice would work). 1 shallot, minced. Fill a small ...

Food, life, and adventure. Cherry, Blueberry, and Rhubarb Pie Feat. Serious Eats’ Easy Pie Dough. July 7, 2015. A couple of friends and myself gathered one summer day to make and eat pie. There’s a saying that goes “what grows together, goes together”. So perhaps the fact that cherries, blueberries, and rhubarb are all ready at around the same time is the universe’s way of telling us that they would make a great pie filling. The crust for this pie came from the website serious eats. Although this pie cru...

Well this is it. I'm here. 66 years old,and still swims three times a day! Once again my enthusiasm for old machinery brings me back to the blog. We're just back from a short break in the resort town of Rotorua, New Zealand, where serendipity placed us on a rather unusual 1944 vehicle. At first glance, this is a rather ugly tour boat. But it has a party trick up its sleeve! The signwriting gives it away a little, but never mind. If you've never seen one before, its a DUKW amphibious landing vehicle,.

So blogging and keeping it current will be a challenge in itself. Teach myself to take pleasing photos with my Digital SLR. Oddly enough, many years ago, way back in the 70’s, I used to take some pretty good pictures with an all manual 35mm Canon AT-1 (man, I loved that camera. 8221; Well, this is way beyond my comfort zone. There it is, in permanent ink below my full name: Doctor of Medicine. The same thought washed over me as it did on the first day of medical school. There must have been some sort of mistake. What's up with Michael and Jackie. Thursday, October 29, 2009. Boo at the Zoo. This is Sara, our new friend and a true answer to some heartfelt prayers. She will be taking care of the kids 4 days/week and will be with us through next summer. I can't even begin to list everything, but she is WONDERFUL. Truly a blessing to us. Gabriella has already done much better this week having the consistency, and she has a great time with Sara. We are blessed! Mommy arrives home from work, and soon after we eat!
