Remember September '44

On 17 September 1944 thousands of paratroopers descended from the sky by parachute or glider up to 150 km behind enemy lines. Their goal: to secure to bridges across the rivers in Holland so that the Allied army could advance rapidly northwards and turn right into the lowlands of Germany, hereby skirting around the Siegfried line, the German defence line. If all carried out as planned it should have ended the war by Christmas 1944.

Our Lives in Bits and Pieces: March 2012

http://ourlivesinbitsandpieces.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Our Lives in Bits and Pieces. Thursday, 15 March 2012. A mild winter compared to the last one. There's a bit of a change of format here folks, we have quite a lot of old photos from 1988, so I'll put them on display and do a bit of rambling underneath them. I know this is a pretty poor photo,as, I'm sorry to say, most of them are! But the problems this caused us in the garage were horrendous! Tell ye whit son, if I get you a good second-hand cylinder head, will that keep the cost down? Aye, well, I know ...

The Netherlands | Wanderlust

https://chrissigillispie.wordpress.com/european-media/the-netherlands

Craving the world beyond your backyard. In the Netherlands, we spent time in Amsterdam and Nijmegen, two cities that could not be more different. Amsterdam buzzes with life as one would expect it to, and has a great European feel, where Nijmegen is extremely comparable to Fort Collins. The next day, we took a train to Nijmegen to visit with Radboud University. The morning that we left Amsterdam for good. We paid a visit to the Anne Frank House, a must see. The house was very emotional for most, but d...

News, reviews, events, and thoughts pertaining to World War II. In case you haven't surmised from my earlier posts, I am of a later generation than most writers on the Second World War, neither GI Generation. As such, I wasn't there. And wasn't even raised by those who were there. I find the entire war period fascinating. I devour books about all theatres of the war, both fiction and non-fiction. I grew up watching black-and-white documentaries. I've played computer games, both strategic. Set in the 1940s.

How I Remember September Eleventh - the September 11 World Trade Center terrorist attacks through personal photographs and text (pictures photos web design by De Vries Design & Technology)

Notes and photography by Tor de Vries. Scroll to the right to view the site. I took these pictures exactly one week after the Twin Towers fell. The Brooklyn Bridge was closed to most traffic, a sight I have never seen before. The most significant signs of change were the smell, the barricades and the copious number of National Guard on nearly every corner, warily watching the pedestrians. Then, at the ruins themselves: the absence of something that was once there. Look up. See the sky? Until it shut down...
