One house, divided. Like a ton of bricks. Old enemies, and new ones →. August 11, 2012. And for our next trick, we will make this chimney disappear. This was even more dangerous than taking the hearth down in flip flops. But mostly to Joe, who had to stand on the roof and heave cinderblocks onto the lawn. It was very Donkey Kong-esque. I, meanwhile had to haul each block (or the fragments) into our growing cinderblock castle. I am starting to know how the Hebrew slaves who built the pyramids felt.

One house, divided. Monthly Archives: August 2012. August 29, 2012. You have probably heard that renovations suck, and it’s true. I think I’ve been handling the inconvenience pretty well rolling with the punches of not having a back door, having my yard turned into scrap heap, having to clean debris from every interior surface daily. It’s hard to explain how both were caused by the renovation, but I can try. No one tells you that this might be your life one day. Welcome to the dollhouse. August 26, 2012.

One house, divided. Like a ton of bricks. August 4, 2012. It took three years, but we finally gained enough misguided optimism (and money, let’s not forget money) to attempt Phase II. In case you forgot, Phase II involves the kitchen, living area, and full exterior of the house. There are many reasons you should not attempt this yourself, but the chief one is pain. You will be in terrific amounts of pain for 48 hours after you finish, and a fair amount during. This entry was posted in Uncategorized.

One house, divided. Old enemies, and new ones. A stoop to conquer →. August 22, 2012. Just a few small ways this project has impacted me this week:. I have started looking forward to trash day like a kid to Christmas. That’s how excited I am to get at least a few bags of crap off my lawn. The cat doesn’t get that the back door is gone, and that scratching on the plywood will not get her let out, or in. Instead, she meows and sits forlornly on the pavement where the door used to be. I Don't Eat Bacon: October 2009
http://idonteatbacon.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Sunday, October 11, 2009. A different kind of potato salad. I've reached what I consider a sort of culinary milestone: This week, I cooked beans myself for the first time in my life. Of all possible kitchen achievements, this one is low on the skill-level spectrum, but it's one about which I'm nevertheless sort of proud. At the time, though, the hungry part of me (which was very hungry) thought, This is a huge pain in the ass. Everything that Mark says about this salad. Too lazy for recipes. 2/3 c brown ...
I Don't Eat Bacon: November 2009
http://idonteatbacon.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 19, 2009. I lost track of when I prepared these, but I can do my best to recreate my thoughts about the results (which I'd drafted in a Word document that, of course, was lost when the computer guys "fixed" the computer). Serves 4 to 6. Total time: 1 hr 15 minutes. This falls squarely into the "Sounds too simple to be good, but is really, really. 1 large red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces. 4 medium carrots, halved lengthwise and cut into 1-inch-wide pieces. 4 garlic cloves, chopped.
I Don't Eat Bacon: pureed turnips
http://idonteatbacon.blogspot.com/2009/12/pureed-turnips.html
Monday, December 28, 2009. I'll be the first to admit it: There is nothing sexy about the word "turnip.". As I pound out these words on my keyboard, I know this is not a universal food law in my life. I love all. Of things that don't require any chewing whatsoever. Soups! So maybe I can't justify why purees annoy the crap out of me. But they do. At least, until now.). How to Cook Everything. Serves 5 or 6 as a side. 1 1/2 lb. turnips. 1 or 2 medium potatoes. Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
I Don't Eat Bacon: snow day, part 2 of 3
http://idonteatbacon.blogspot.com/2009/12/snow-day-part-2-of-3.html
Sunday, December 20, 2009. Snow day, part 2 of 3. For at least the last year (and probably longer), I have been obsessed with the idea of making delicious, perfect macaroni and cheese. I want it to be the greatest, most satisfying thing I have ever made. Whenever I find a recipe for it, though, I am seriously turned off by the massive quantities of milk, cheese and butter usually called for. And I abandon the mission for a time. How to Cook Everything. Serves 4 or more. Time: about 45 minutes. 1 Preheat ...
I Don't Eat Bacon: June 2009
http://idonteatbacon.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, June 6, 2009. Candies, cake and catchup. Hello, my little bloglets! After a shamefully long hiatus since my last post- a combination of getting a job(! And really, truly not doing much interesting cooking while spending weekends at friends' apartments, down the shore, etc.- I am back in the saddle. First things first: Waaaay back in early May, I spent the night before a big race. Icebox cake and cupcakes. Adapted from: the back of the box of Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers,. 3 c heavy cream.

I Don't Eat Bacon: April 2009

Wednesday, April 29, 2009. Complete in every detail; perfect. That's how Merriam-Webster Online. Which isn't to say it wasn't still an incredible meal. Because it was. As is often the case with me, simple meals can be outrageously, unexpectedly good- perhaps because the straightforward ingredients and preparation don't seem. Grilled tuna with mustard sauce. I Don't Eat Bacon: August 2009
http://idonteatbacon.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 31, 2009. Grilled, grilled and chilled. Yesterday brought refreshingly cool weather and with it, I think, a reminder that summer isn't sticking around forever. I don't know how else to explain why Sunday night dinner was so grill-centric. I also think that the impending change of season explains why my dad and I impulsively went ingredient-shopping at our town's farmers' market. Yogurty. Neither was such a bad thing, but the eggplant was a little lost.). And with all that time spent before...
I Don't Eat Bacon: snow day, part 3 of 3
http://idonteatbacon.blogspot.com/2009/12/snow-day-part-3-of-3.html
Sunday, December 20, 2009. Snow day, part 3 of 3. I made this recipe so long ago that I don't remember much of the specifics. I happened to be channel surfing one afternoon and stumbled quite. Accidentally upon the annoyingly cheerful Rachael Ray with her husky voice and irritating abbreviations. My visceral hatred for her 30-Minute Meals. Took longer than usual to kick in, and somehow I found myself watching her prepare a recipe that- gasp- I actually wanted to make! Adapted from Rachael Ray. 1 Heat a l...
I Don't Eat Bacon: March 2009
http://idonteatbacon.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 30, 2009. Woo wee, what a weekend. It wasn't particularly fabulous or interesting (or, at least, according to people whose lives aren't so mundane as mine), but it was full of good things: a dinner date and mall trip with Mom, my return to running after three days of nursing a very. Painfully strained/pulled glute, a hailstorm (! The verdict on swordfish: My, it is meaty! I was really surprised by the meatiness. I don't know how else to explain it, except that it was good. 1 1/4 lb. por...
