Although the term Raku conjures up images of Japanese pottery that is traditionally used in a Japanese tea ceremony, I prefer to instead see it more as a way of describing the overall process of quick firing and quick cooling followed by a process of reduction that results in a unique glazed finish. My personal preference is for a transparent crackle glaze over a white stoneware body with the carbonised reduction showing as highlighted black filling the crackle lines.

Apply glaze and allow to dry. Place piece in kiln. Raise the temperature to required level, typically 1000oC. Remove piece from kiln. Delay putting in reduction chamber till piece ‘pings’. Place in reduction chamber. Allow combustible material to ignite. Remove from chamber and immerse in water.
