75% administration, 25% research… my life on the alt-ac track. August 30, 2011. So, my horrible paper that I have submitted to four journals finally got a revise and resubmit this time, hooray! The trouble is, it is a very big revision that they have requested. Fine, fine, I’ll do it, even though it is extremely painful. So I’m considering asking for an extension for the first time in my life. Anybody have any experience doing that? Should I ask now? August 9, 2011. Job Search in Academe,. 8221; Many of ...

75% administration, 25% research… my life on the alt-ac track. Advanced faculty wrangling techniques. Deluxe apartment in the sky. September 28, 2011. Guess what, guess what! I’m moving to the Chronicle Blog Network. I know, I know. You hate it when people do that. Then I realized that I don’t really have a pseudonym in this space. “Research Centered” is the name of this blog, not the name of a blogger. It doesn’t really convey a personality. So I would like to introduce myself to you as Minerva Cheevy.

75% administration, 25% research… my life on the alt-ac track. Larr; Email autoreplies. September 9, 2011. In grad school and later, I often heard people say that it was important to have a well-rounded life and interests outside of academe. My response to such statements, which I usually kept to myself, was that I could have a well-rounded life. I got a job. And really, what did I need a well-rounded life for anyway? I was already doing what I loved, right? And what am I doing? I love the idea that othe...

75% administration, 25% research… my life on the alt-ac track. Larr; Deluxe apartment in the sky. Advanced faculty wrangling techniques. September 23, 2011. Getting a group of faculty members together to accomplish something has often been compared to herding cats. I disagree. When I want to get my cats all into one room to do something at the same time, all I have to do is stand in my kitchen, open a can of Friskies, and yell “Num nums! Cats, neatly lined up. Completely unlike faculty. You will still ne...

Quack medicine, Traditional medicine, and Whole person healthcare | Research Eyes

Thoughts of a scientist on science and science policy. Or, research thoughts and meta research thoughts of a researcher. Professor Asimov in 1950. The dark side →. Quack medicine, Traditional medicine, and Whole person healthcare. March 5, 2013. I went to a health talk last night from a woman who has what I will describe as a whole-person clinic. She is a chiropractor, and other services at her clinic (offered by other professionals) include counseling, acupuncture, yoga, herbal medicine, etc. That’...

Saturday, May 18, 2013. I mowed my lawn earlier this week, entering the mild afternoon sunshine to clip at the overgrown grass in Chienne's fenced yard. I was going downhill near one of the pine trees when I yanked the mower toward me in order to cover all the grass near the pointy needles waiting to gouge me when I saw the frog huddled closely to the ground amidst the roaring noise and swirling clippings of grass. As I consider it more though, I am quite frog-like of late. Keeping the lowest of prof...

Saturday, June 13, 2015. I greeted Smallest One, resplendent in a white sundress as she ran gracefully toward me at the door of the church. I scooped her up, pushing her blonde locks behind her shoulder and smiling down at Little One, smoothing hair that was darkening to match my deep brunette. What'd you bring me? Smallest asked and I reached for the jewelry boxes I'd had for years, smoothing the dust from the velvety top with my thumb before flipping both of them open. He - Stepdad - was baptized first...

Sunday, May 18, 2014. Mapping, part 2. On a Saturday evening, after mowing my lawn and showering, I began to draft my journey map. In Excel. Because I'm super-cool like that. I'd be percolating on this since Wednesday, not thinking about it very hard, but letting myself absorb that I wanted to devote it some attention. Is it bad to confess I was a bit afraid of this? Point is why would I want to delve deeper into a brain so scary? I'm good with superficial knowledge, thanks. Anyway. Back to mapping!
Minor Revisions: Mapping, part 1

Thursday, May 15, 2014. Mapping, part 1. Where do you see yourself next? He asked and I cocked my head at him. For my next role? I clarified and pressed my lips together when he nodded. "I don't know.". You must know," he replied, smiling, for I am a thoughtful person to the point of being neurotic. Not really," I stated slowly. "I want to be a better person. That's what I know.". What does that mean? He asked, leaning toward me behind the closed door in his office. It matters not. God's will be done.

Minor Revisions: March 2013

Tuesday, March 19, 2013. I vaguely remember being infatuated. That glimmer of wonder when he seems to like me in return. Where - regardless of the action or distraction - where the very thought of him curves my lips into a silly smile. When - even in the middle of a meeting stressful or boring - there's this fluttery hope and happiness. My life of late has been the opposite of that. Mom finally spoke. "Are you OK? OK," I confirmed. Aunt talked of biopsy dates and times and I assured them I'd be home for ...
Minor Revisions: February 2013

Wednesday, February 06, 2013. I opened my eyes, blinking twice as I tried to snuggle into my warm, borrowed bed and return to sleep. I frowned when I could not, turning all my attention to my head and deciding that, yes, it did indeed ache. The spasms would ease for blissful moments, giving me a chance to clean the bathroom and myself, to try in vain to swallow another tablet, before returning to misery until my eyes watered pitifully and sides ached mightily. Sunday, February 03, 2013. Fifteen minutes,"...
Minor Revisions: Mom Flies Solo
http://minorrevisions.blogspot.com/2014/05/mom-flies-solo.html
Saturday, May 17, 2014. My parents spent February, 2012, just south of Tampa Bay. Dad didn't feel well during that trip, though they did have a nice time. Returning home the first of March, Mom made an appointment for him to see our family doctor and he was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer on March 16. It was at last decided that she didn't want to stay the whole month. She would instead fly to join them for the middle two weeks. I checked her in the day before, frowning thoughtfully at her tick...
Minor Revisions: The Travel
http://minorrevisions.blogspot.com/2011/05/travel.html
Thursday, May 26, 2011. Growing up, I was fascinated by travel - reading of far-away places and fascinating people and wishing I was able to visit them. Given that we flew all of once as a family, that seemed a bit of an unlikely goal but I'm a homebody at heart so those places on the globe became fun fantasies. In junior high, we could win a trip to the annual conference - in northern Illinois. And so that trend continued once in grad school - write abstracts and go places! Florida, Atlantic Coast.

Design Correlation Rules to Get the Most Out of Your SIEM. On August 13, 2015 5:00 AM. Security Information Event Management. Every networked environment generates thousands of logs from disparate systems. Individually, many of these events may seem worthless. But when looking for a specific needle in the haystack, these logs can be very valuable. To gain this level of visibility, many organizations deploy a SIEM (Security Information Event Management) solution. On August 12, 2015 1:00 PM. PAL Applicatio...
