Listen to debates about school tests or read media headlines and the story will be similar the world over: damaging tests cause stress and hamper learning. The perception of testing is toxic. And yet, what if we went about testing in a way that could reduce stress? Could we flip the association linking testing and negative stress to instead recognise the benefits of testing for learning as making our students more resilient in the face of stress?

A team from Durham University have evaluated a trial of a Project Based Learning (PBL) intervention called ‘Learning through REAL Projects’, developed by the Innovation Unit – an independent social enterprise which aims to improve public sector services. The programme involves teachers from different subjects designing and planning projects which enable pupils to produce a publicly-exhibited output such as a product, publication, or presentation.

Breakfast clubs boost reading and maths results for primary school pupils. A randomised controlled trial involving 106 primary schools in England with higher than average numbers of disadvantaged pupils looked at the impact of running breakfast clubs in the schools.
