About the Refuge…. About the Refuge…. Remote and rugged, the the Farallon Islands protect an incredible bounty of avian and mammalian wildlife. These rocky islands, located 28 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge in California, can be described through numerous superlatives. They contain the largest seabird nesting colony south of Alaska; they hold the largest colony of western gulls in the world; and they support half the world’s population of Ashy storm-petrels. About the Refuge…. Saving Seabirds on the Farallon Islands. The US. Fish and Wildlife Service, Point Blue Conservation Science (formerly PRBO), and Island Conservation have partnered together to restore native seabird populations on the islands, particularly the Ashy Storm-Petrel. Removing invasive house mice will provide safer breeding habitat for seabirds and other native animals. Once invasive species are removed from islands, island ecosystems can often recover quickly.
