restoration – the view from here

The view from here. 21st century ramblings on 18th century Living. June 3, 2016. Want to live in Paradise? It was John Adams who deemed this stretch of land along the Connecticut River in 1771. And that is why, in all our travels over forty years, we have never left. And why, we had to save the Olcott House for the next traveler who would like to share in this experience. The house will be for sale at all stages of its restoration, and will be priced accordingly. It is now at $250K. If you are, or know o...

Aprons Gone Wild: It's That Time Again....

http://apronsgonewild.blogspot.com/2012/09/its-that-time-again_7.html

Friday, September 7, 2012. It's That Time Again. My children recoil in fear. My friends turn their heads the other way and grimace. My husband cowers in his recliner, lowering the brim on his baseball cap so as not to meet my eyes. This is the reaction when I start talking about politics. In the meantime, check us out at. September 7, 2012 at 7:13 PM. Amen Sister . How True You Are! I Love the People who say Oh I Dont. Get Into Politics Really I Say cause. It touches every part of your Life . L’esp...

Aprons Gone Wild: June 2013

http://apronsgonewild.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 30, 2013. Where has everybody gone? Most of the blogs I follow haven't had a new post since last Fall, including my own! I think we just run out of things to talk about. Or we get busy. Or we're distracted by facebook, twitter, etc. I know how disappointed I am when I check the blogs I used to read faithfully and there no new post, so I assume that readers who used to follow my blog have the same emotion. The Enos Kellogg Homestead - Restoring an 18th Century Connecticut Home: Architecture

http://enoskellogghouse.blogspot.com/p/architecture_21.html

The Enos Kellogg House is a two story (plus attic), 2,800 square foot saltbox farmhouse. The house faces the terminating end of Ponus Avenue Extension, a road that has evolved from a Native American trail between Norwalk and New Canaan known as “Ponasses Path”, into a street connecting the two towns, and finally into a dead-end as a result of construction of the Merritt Parkway adjacent to the property. While no original windows remain on the first or second floors, the likely original front door remains.

The Enos Kellogg Homestead - Restoring an 18th Century Connecticut Home: Artifacts and Documents

http://enoskellogghouse.blogspot.com/p/artifacts.html

What do you do when you find pieces of clay pipes, redware, stoneware, pontiled bottles and 19th century pottery in an area that is just about to be sealed in by foundation repairs? Dig, dig, dig. It appears that construction of a Greek Revival side entrancde into the house provided a perfect opprtunity to dispose of some household trash. If only the Comstocks treated their garbage with more care, I might have found something intact. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Attic and Basement Tours. THE VIEW FROM HERE.

Other Structures on Property. A timber framed structure located to the west of the dwelling house was constructed in the late 18. Century or early 19. Century, as evidence by its raised plate construction and evidence of spoon bit augering in open mortises. Victorian era photographs of the property show the structure in use as a barn. Three cattle stanchions remain in place, anchored into a concrete pad inscribed 1917. Other Associated Structures and Resources. In a personal interview with the current ow...

The Enos Kellogg Homestead - Restoring an 18th Century Connecticut Home: May 2014

http://enoskellogghouse.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

May 02, 2014. House Cousins and Old Photos. Last week I got one of those great, out-of-the-blue emails that I always hope the old house gods will send my way. Given how happy I was a a couple of years ago when we got a brief visit from a man who had worked as a gardener on our property in the 1940s, you can imagine how exciting it was to hear from an honest-to-goodness direct descendant of Enos Kellogg, himself. Enos Kellogg House in the 1880s? Happily, even while spending all the livelong day working on...

Tuesday, November 12, 2013. It's those little things. Sprinkle your vocabulary with hopeful, happy words. Brilliant, stupendous, miraculous, awesome and spectacular are a few of he superlatives that separate the upbeat personality from the downtrodden and depressed. Let there be light! Talk the talk. Repeated positive affirmations uttered to yourself silently, will actually stick in your subconscious and affect your daily life in multiple ways. At first , it will feel weird. Aprons Gone Wild: January 2012

http://apronsgonewild.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 2, 2012. New Year, New Table. Some scenarios are fortuitous. Some are just pure luck. Either way, I wound up with a man who can create out of wood, just about anything I dream up. I lo. Ve old, worn, humble pine furniture. No gloss.no shellac, no enamel. Just plain old painted wood. I often need a small piece of furniture to fit into one of the nooks and crannies that make up our old house. Can you make me a small table with tapered legs to fit into this space over here?
