Return to Panamania: November 2008

http://returntopanamania.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 26, 2008. Who is the who? This is my dilemma. I've spent the last month trying to figure out the best way to recognize individual capuchin monkeys.  Is it the slightly different shape of the intersection between the black and white fur on their foreheads? Or the size and protrusion of their brow-ridge? 160;How stable are these traits? 160;will a juvenile I recognize today look similar three months or a year from now? I have learned that there are many people who seem to spend a lot of...

Return to Panamania: April 2009

http://returntopanamania.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Can you find the fer de lance? Here's  the photo of the fer de lance that was outside the dorms yesterday.  A beautiful snake! Monday, April 13, 2009. This morning brought more excitement than I'm generally interested in before my coffee.  It came in the form of a 1 meter fer-de-lance ( Bothrops asper. Or try to move it, and put the unlucky person who draws the short straw at risk as they try to move it? Sunday, April 12, 2009. Alfredo, taking the eggs that Oldemar found. Bob c...

Return to Panamania: December 2008

http://returntopanamania.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, December 6, 2008. I finally got recordings of alarm calls! After weeks of always being just a couple of seconds too late, or having other monkeys crashing around in the trees obscuring the vocalization, I finally managed to record alarm calls today! Click the "video" above to hear them- the website won't let me upload audio files, but will let me upload video clips, so this was my solution! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Return to Panamania: An unwelcome guest

http://returntopanamania.blogspot.com/2009/04/unwelcome-guest.html

Monday, April 13, 2009. This morning brought more excitement than I'm generally interested in before my coffee.  It came in the form of a 1 meter fer-de-lance ( Bothrops asper. Outside my room. Fer-de-lance are highly venomous and have the reputation for being quite aggressive.  Take a look here if you want nightmares:   http:/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tissue necrosis following bite from Bothrops asper PLoS Medicine.jpg. The picture of the boys leg on the link was frightful! View my complete profile.

Lord of the Apes: A Blog about Ethology, Primates, Minds, and Culture: News(pecies)

http://lordoftheapes.blogspot.com/2010/10/newspecies.html

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Wednesday, October 27. Some breaking news for once. Whenever I get some fascinating new primate news coming my way, there's always an associated paper, and I always feel the need to read. The paper before I say anything about the findings. It turns out that the papers can take a while to read, usually because I am compelled to look back into the references, and well, time just tends to go by. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lord of the Apes: A Blog about Ethology, Primates, Minds, and Culture: Ruminations on a conversation between primatologists

http://lordoftheapes.blogspot.com/2013/05/ruminations-on-conversation-between.html

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Thursday, May 9. Ruminations on a conversation between primatologists. A couple years back I had the privilege to hear Robert Sapolsky speak. It was a detailed talk, but given how much I know about his research already, there wasn't a huge amount of new information for me to learn. However, I did pick up on something he only briefly mentioned, and eagerly looked forward to asking him about it after the talk. I said to him:. Olive baboons are wid...

Lord of the Apes: A Blog about Ethology, Primates, Minds, and Culture: Is there really such a thing as a spandrel?

http://lordoftheapes.blogspot.com/2013/05/is-there-really-such-thing-as-spandrel.html

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Thursday, May 23. Is there really such a thing as a spandrel? While engaging in a bit of background research for last week's post. I stumbled upon a discussion of spandrels. On one of my favorite blogs. When discussing the validity of evolutionary theories and evolutionary psychology in general, spandrels. Another of my favorite blogs). In each species the swellings appear in the most visible location. If these traits are adaptive and re...The r...

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Tuesday, June 18. I've been quite pleased that I've actually been able to update regularly over the past several months, but things are changing yet again. Starting in September I'm going to be traveling to Scotland to work on a new project, though it will still be in the domain of primate cognition and behavior. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lord of the Apes: A Blog about Ethology, Primates, Minds, and Culture: Dispersal Patterns

http://lordoftheapes.blogspot.com/2013/03/dispersal-patterns.html

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Tuesday, March 19. In this post, I want to discuss an important aspect of primate group behavior: dispersal. Most baboons spend their entire lives as part of a single group, with one main exception. As males approach adulthood, they will disperse, leaving their troop of birth to join a new troop, where they will (usually) spend the rest of their lives. She can find, and the male isn't going to get any sympathy from the rest of the troop. He can ...

Lord of the Apes: A Blog about Ethology, Primates, Minds, and Culture: Vervets: the Forbidden Circle

http://lordoftheapes.blogspot.com/2013/05/vervets-forbidden-circle.html

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Thursday, May 2. Vervets: the Forbidden Circle. I lied. The second article on vervets did not appear in Science, but in Current Biology. Other than that, I stand by my earlier statement: this is an unusual and thought provoking article, and it happens to be about vervet monkeys. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lord of the Apes: A Blog about Ethology, Primates, Minds, and Culture: Lip smacking and the origins of language

http://lordoftheapes.blogspot.com/2013/04/lip-smacking-and-origins-of-language.html

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Tuesday, April 16. Lip smacking and the origins of language. In a previous installment. I discussed gelada vocalizations and some new research specifically dealing with copulation calls. Thore Bergman, one of the same researchers who put together that paper, just published a short correspondence. Discussing a wide array of gelada vocalizations and their relationship to the evolution of human language. As I am fond of repeating, wobbles and human...

http://lordoftheapes.blogspot.com/2013/06/conceptions-of-violence.html

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Thursday, June 13. After last week, I've been catching up with some of Bowles' previous publications and related research. I've read A Cooperative Species. Bowles' masterwork with Herbert Gintis on the origin of altruism and modern society, but reading it once isn't really enough to have read. It It is a dense book filled with math and evidence, theory and data; it requires investiture. However, Jung-Kyoo Choi and Bowles. To rub his hands all ov...

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Thursday, May 30. The Most Unusual Looking Creatures in the World. Several people have recently directed my attention to a set of images. Floating around the internet, described as "animals you didn't know existed." Its a nice set, but I did know about most of them, even things like the markhor. Which I only recently discovered). I wrote about the snub-nosed monkey. She recognized just about every creatures in those books, or at very least all o...

Lord of the Apes: A Blog about Ethology, Primates, Minds, and Culture: Mortimer the Midlife Crisis Male

http://lordoftheapes.blogspot.com/2010/01/mortimer-midlife-crisis-male.html

LORD OF THE APES. WANDERINGS THROUGH THE WORLD OF PRIMATES. Sunday, January 3. Mortimer the Midlife Crisis Male. I don't visit the second troop very often, but over the course of my visits I have been more and more struck by the behavior of a grizzled male called Mortimer. Mortimer is certainly not young. I say this because he is missing all of his canine teeth. Baboons are not. Too often for me to be able to pick out the moment when a baboon loses a coveted fang. Morty also has the big coat and deeply l...

Van uitstel komt geen afstel? Beter laat dan nooit? 7 augustus 2009 - Westerlo. KIA ORA! Van uitstel komt geen afstel?

Return to Paradise...again

Return to Paradise.again. Mission experiences in Samoa. Tuesday, November 13, 2012. We leave today for New Zealand to meet John and Mereda for a week as they are finished their mission also. After dinner at Aggie Grey's. Our Tofas have been said to many people and it is very hard, knowing we may never see these dear people again. I really believe we will come back some time – even for a visit – but that is because we have said goodbye before and have always returned. I will truly miss my Tuesdays in Uafa...
