Kitgum in the Fall: July 2008
http://rachel-in-kitgum.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Kitgum in the Fall. Thursday, July 31, 2008. On the bus today, I muuuused about how I. Love the anonymity of this mid-sized city. I didn't know anyone on the bus and they didn't know me. But we're all DCers and so respectful enough of one another. There were a bunch of children giggling and laughing and guffawing as their caretaker tickled them in the rear of the bus. I should have taped the sound of the laughters and stuck it on my iPod or something. It was terrific. To pack for trips across the ocean.

Kitgum in the Fall: November 2008
http://rachel-in-kitgum.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Kitgum in the Fall. Tuesday, November 18, 2008. Okay This is what happened. My hard drive up-and-died! Like, I mean, completely, utterly died. And we have been living in an old KICWA return center, in crowded huts, with no computers. So I have not been able to write anything. This is what else has been happening:. The celebration (by nearly the entire ex-pat community) of Cheese Day at Madam's shop! Gambian bracelets being given away. Plagiarism, shunning, and conflict transformation. One of my housemate...

Kitgum in the Fall: Mama Ayaa
http://rachel-in-kitgum.blogspot.com/2009/01/mama-ayaa.html
Kitgum in the Fall. Wednesday, January 14, 2009. I was transcribing an interview with my friend Mama Ayaa this morning, in which she talks about the deaths of many in her family at the hands of the LRA. That is sad, I'm sure she understood that you were empathising and not happy because of her misfortune. February 11, 2009 at 8:02 AM. I know she knew that I didn't understand what she was saying at first - it really is just so sad, though! Malaria - awful, awful, awful. Thanks for the comment! This week, I.

Kitgum in the Fall: September 2008
http://rachel-in-kitgum.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Kitgum in the Fall. Monday, September 29, 2008. This morning, there isn’t a cloud in the sky today. It’s gorgeous. But I wish it would rain. I want to bathe. There are other signs that this is a war-affected society, besides the dearth of culture. There are the children who have found landmines and have lost limbs; but there aren’t many, at least not in town. In town, most of the signs of war are beneath the surface, but like with icebergs (shout out to SITers! Other items of note:. My new Acholi words:.

Random Thoughts this side of Normal: September 2005
http://whichsideofnormal.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 30, 2005. Taradise, more like Idiotdise. Yeah, I know it doesn't have a good ring to it, but the truth is the truth people. I drank too much starbucks after work yesterday and was up late into the night. There were no Laguna repeats, I caught the last Breaking Bonaduce, and was surfing the channels. I ran across this little E! Gem Is she aware that cameras are on her? I would venture a guess and say, no. She is a liar! Insert whatever she is talking about. She said it I swear! I don't t...

Kitgum in the Fall: Death
http://rachel-in-kitgum.blogspot.com/2009/07/death.html
Kitgum in the Fall. Wednesday, July 8, 2009. My dad sent me a joke e-mail last Wednesday. I wrote him back: "Ha ha.". He wrote me back: "Call me when you get a chance.". So I called him. And he told me my dog was dying and my mother was hysterical. I'm in the middle of the office of my internship getting this phone call, keep in mind. On my facebook wall, my away message read that I was "Having a bad day". My friend JP from northern Uganda wrote a response, asking "Why? I thought about whether it would b...

Kitgum in the Fall: August 2008
http://rachel-in-kitgum.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Kitgum in the Fall. Friday, August 29, 2008. The clock is ticking down very, very quickly. I still have a lot to do. Find a duffel bag to pack my stuff in (erm. yeah. that's a littl. E bit vitally important). Figure out medical insurance junk. Buy film and AA batteries. Get myself an absentee ballet for the voting in November. Visit my bank and let them know that ATM action in Kitgum is a-ok. Say goodbye to all of my friends. Pack, pack, pack. The photo is a view from my DC Summer bedroom window. The onl...

Kitgum in the Fall: October 2008
http://rachel-in-kitgum.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Kitgum in the Fall. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. This evening was another one of the evenings that I love it here. Walking home from work, I was greeted by child after lovely little child, screaming-giggling-calling “Rockelay! Yesterday, I also loved it here. Wandering through town in the middle of the day (no power no generator fuel = no work), I came across a random assemblage of traditional dancers and musicians. It was great and amazing! Today was one of the days that I LOVE it here. For example, Mon...
