In the original Eisa dance, men play the paranku (small frame drum) while doing an alternating angular dance in rows. These dancers shout calls of ei ya sa sa answered by ah ii ah. These dancers are accompanied by jester-like men with painted faces who do the characteristic whistling and interact with the crowd. Modern Eisa is based more on folk songs of Okinawa and is more athletic, incorporating kicks and lunges while hefting the barrel drums and paranku high in the air.

My mother recounts stories of her deliberate musical indoctrination of me in-uetero and later in the bassonette. Thailand has a fascinating array of drums owing to a rich history of classical and folk music, diverse hill-tribe population and its position in the center of SE Asia where it brought in influences from other neighboring countries. Another drum that is used for within temple and shrines of Thailand is a ceremonial drum pictured at left. Though it resembles the Japanese Taiko in shape and size, these drums are used to announce Buddhist ceremonies.

In the Noto peninsula region of Japan, taiko is often accompanied by mask dancing. It is said that centuries ago taiko was used in this area to frighten away unwelcome visitors from villages. Groups in small towns sometimes have their own unique base rhythm which they use to accompany the festival performances.
