Progress Toward Enlightenment

http://richard.brooksby.org/1997/05/10/progress-toward-enlightenment

Progress towards enlightenment seems to be a process of "anti-learning". It is the gradual realization that understanding and judgments that you have taken for granted are arbitrary parts of your own frame of reference. These judgments come from learning during childhood, or are part of the human condition. Here is an example. I recently realized that my conception of "greatness" was a value judgment buried deep in my psyche. A supernova seems grand, great, profound, but why?

Comic Strip

This is the first comic strip I produced after studying Scott McCloud's book "Understanding Comics". It emerged fully formed, without very much practice. The character is based on the little girl above the contents page of Jack Hamm's book "Cartooning the Head and Figure". The Trouble With Roads

http://richard.brooksby.org/1997/05/10/the-trouble-with-roads

The Trouble With Roads. One day we must stop building new roads. When? Adding Roads can Slow You Down. This simple example shows how adding a road to a network can slow everyone down, even with the same number of cars using it. Shows a simple road network between two points A. The cost of travelling down a road is shown as a function of x. The number of cars using it. (If you like, you can imagine that the formula 5x 1. Is a road of length 1. With a width of 1/5. Figure 1. Simple road network. With x = 3.

Adlan

http://richard.brooksby.org/1987/adlan

I used to develop software for the Amstrad CPC back in the mid-80s when I was a teenager. My largest and most successful project was the "Adlan" adventure game compiler ROM, which was published by Graduate Software, and reviewed in at least one magazine. Adlan was a pretty cool project. It's all in Z80 assembler, compiled with the Arnor MAXAM assembler ROM. It's divided into files because it wouldn't all fit in memory. And then has tables of all the compiler error messages and keywords. This is the run-t...

Reasons not to go to Cuba - The choice to be rational is arbitrary

http://chard.livejournal.com/57525.html

Reasons not to go to Cuba. I just came back from a trip to Cuba with my parents. Everyone's asking "how was Cuba? And so I'd better write something about it. In addition to this, the food was terrible everywhere, and there was no "great Cuban music" to be had anywhere. All the places we went recommended by the Lonely Planet had gone away, were closed, or had turned into tourist traps with yet more rip-offs and scams. Asking the Cubans only got you recommendations for more scams. Go to an all-inclusive re...

Bankers should not be paid ridiculous and extortionate amounts of money. Keep out the people we don't want. Housing should be affordable and. Encourage economic growth. Make everyone richer. They are the future. Reduce emissions. Clean up. Reduce waste and improve service. Are you in favour? And what about Europe? Should Britain be at the centre of Europe or more at its periphery? Gravity arms for the double three-legged gravity escapement. This is a quick first look at the gravity arms for the escapement. Unfortunately we have no direct plans for these arms, although the principal is explained in a number of book that we have along with generic designs. We also have limited access to another Smith clock. I’m not going to include any technical details yet because we don’t know if they will work!
