the belfry chronicles: happened

http://richardrants.blogspot.com/2013/12/happened.html

Summer turned and the leaves fell and now autumn is almost gone as well. The Red Sox won. I stayed up late to see. Mezcal, Old Fashioneds and Sazeracs stood lined on the bar, with shooters of sangrita to chase. We drank them, too many of them, and stumbled out into the Soho night. My bus never came, so I grabbed another. . Wine sipped, glugged and sometimes spat. Old friends caught up with over beers and burgers. Plus ça change. . And now it’s now, and there’s a journey soon. . View my complete profile.

the belfry chronicles: literary cacophony

http://richardrants.blogspot.com/2006/05/literary-cacophony.html

Cacophony's a great word, but I'm having difficulty with it. You see, the 'phony' part of it restricts its use to sounds, and the realm of the aural. There isn't an elegant equivelent when dealing with the written word. Or if there is, my vocabulary falls short. There are some fantastic words that come close - gallimaufry. That said, my moods would be better of late were they to match the Red Sox's wins and losses. But they don't, so whatever. Writing. I just wrote the term hedgehog mouthwash and I'm...

the belfry chronicles: I am not arachnophobic.

http://richardrants.blogspot.com/2006/05/i-am-not-arachnophobic.html

I am not arachnophobic. But I'm more than curious as to where the massive spider I uncovered while cleaning my room is. It was hiding under a pair of shorts next to my bed. And now it's gone. And I am not arachnophobic. But that doesn't mean I want to share a bed with a spider. Anyway. Untidy rooms and sloppy metaphors abound this evening. And a very large spider. I hope it's not in my bed. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. The * * * Chronicles? Call screening and silver lining.

the belfry chronicles: The conversation...

http://richardrants.blogspot.com/2005/10/conversation.html

Well, I've left. I'm in London. But didn't you have the best time ever during your last few weeks? With, you know, fine wines, amazing food, endless smelly cheese, well-wishing and unerring love of your friends. Don't you think that's worth sticking around for? Oh, and the sambuca. If I recall, you're the one that started this whole fucking thing in the first place, with the whole "do you really think you belong here? And the "what the fuck are you still doing here? Oh for fuck's sake! Ok, Ok, I'm gettin...

the belfry chronicles: 07/06/2014 - 07/13/2014

http://richardrants.blogspot.com/2014_07_06_archive.html

I’ve not written from a train in awhile. I’ve not been on a train in awhile. Oh, I’ve been on the the tube and overground and that sort of thing, but those aren’t really trains. Real trains cross countries and borders, not cities. . I’m off north to Scotland to drink wine and catch up with friends and wonder once again why I don’t here anymore. . I expect this weekend to be every bit as good. Perhaps without the getting chased by bees part, however. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

wine rant: November 2012

http://winerant.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Tuesday, November 27, 2012. Equipo Navazos la Bota de Oloroso 28 Bota Punto. This is expensive. But should you get the chance, you should taste it. Really. Quite pale for an Oloroso. A golden amber. Varnish and mahogany and almonds and caramel and roasted oranges, dusty Victorian office-rich wood, leather, pipe tobacco. Tasted 22 November 2012 at Swig. Buy My Book. Please. Palat...

wine rant: Cuvée du Clos Notre Dame 2004 Vve Fourny et Fils

http://winerant.blogspot.com/2013/12/cuvee-du-clos-notre-dame-2004-vve.html

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Monday, December 23, 2013. Cuvée du Clos Notre Dame 2004 Vve Fourny et Fils. Slow, purposeful mousse. Chantilly cream and lemon shortbread on the nose. Very good biscuit/fruit balance. Closed but intense. As it gets air, there's a fresh cep earthiness that comes through. Tasted 24 November 2013 somewhere in Fulham. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

wine rant: September 2012

http://winerant.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Friday, September 14, 2012. Salt and old vines. Tasted quite a lot of very good juice and early ferments. Roussanne and Marsanne both looking to once again be exceptional this year. There's a bit more acidity than usual, which in that part of the world is a good thing. As always, I'm excited to see how the wines turn out. I wish I could have been there longer. Tight knit, intens...

wine rant: sweet bubbles

http://winerant.blogspot.com/2013/12/sweet-bubbles.html

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Tuesday, December 03, 2013. Doyard Le Libertine Champagne Doux. This is really expensive. It was €120 at the cellar door. They wouldn’t tell us anything about it, other than it was bottled in 2008 and dosaged to 135g/l of residual sugar. I’d never had a Doux Champagne before. My closest comparison, in my mind, was sparkling Icewine from Canada&#...Intense, slightly funky nose of...

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Tuesday, April 01, 2014. Penfolds Release Ultra-Premium Single Grape Cuvee. Do children still play with marbles? That single Marble is priced at £1,000,000. When asked if this was a little steep, a Penfolds representative scoffed, “Really, it ought to be priceless, but if it was we couldn’t sell it, so we just came up with something ridiculously expensive. A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Wednesday, October 24, 2012. Taylors Scion 1855 Vintage Port. An old friend received a small sample of this remarkable wine. It was shared on a quiet morning. Quite brown but with a reddish tint. Tasted at Luvians 5/10/2012. Buy My Book. Please. Tuesday, October 23, 2012. Chambertin Grand Cru 1999 Christophe Perrot-Minot. Another top bit of kit. I love The Sampler. . It's slowly...

wine rant: Duval Leroy Blanc de Chardonnay 1998 (served blind)

http://winerant.blogspot.com/2013/12/duval-leroy-blanc-de-chardonnay-1998.html

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Monday, December 16, 2013. Duval Leroy Blanc de Chardonnay 1998 (served blind). I served this blind on Champagne Sunday a few weeks ago. It showed better than I expected. Slow bubbles - colour showing perfectly for the age - a hint of gold and bronze. Nose is buttered mushrooms, a bit of oyster shell, and a touch of licorice. It gets more floral with air. wine rant: July 2013

http://winerant.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Thursday, July 04, 2013. I submitted the manuscript last Sunday night, and the book is fully funded (though you can still support it here). Here's a fairly ordinary Champagne that you should avoid. More soon. Barnaut Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Bouzy. Good pale gold. Speedy, tiny bubbles. Bruised strawberries, green apples, a bit of hay and shortbread. Perhaps a touch of cocoa.

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Wednesday, February 13, 2013. Equipo Navazos La Bota de Manzanilla Pasada Bota NO. Quite light, but with beginnings of brass. Sea salt and hay with smoked nuts and toffee. There's some citrus there as well as butterscotch and dough. Tasted 8 and 11 January 2013 at Millers Court. Buy My Book. Please. Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Equipo Navazos La Bota de Palo Cortado 34. New writing, experiments, stuff. Posted March 9, 2009 by richard. Sometimes he felt the sea too quiet. It lapped the butterscotch sand with a soft whisper next to him. He closed his eyes and the whisper gave no hint as to the vastness of it. His feet sank slightly. Cool damp seeped through his trainers. He clenched his toes against the cold and opened his eyes again. A fine ripple crashed and raced a foot or two up the beach. That was a different sea. She wasn’t coming back. At the door he let a couple o...
