A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Tuesday, November 27, 2012. Equipo Navazos la Bota de Oloroso 28 Bota Punto. This is expensive. But should you get the chance, you should taste it. Really. Quite pale for an Oloroso. A golden amber. Varnish and mahogany and almonds and caramel and roasted oranges, dusty Victorian office-rich wood, leather, pipe tobacco. Tasted 22 November 2012 at Swig. Buy My Book. Please. Palat...

http://winerant.blogspot.com/2013/12/cuvee-du-clos-notre-dame-2004-vve.html
A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Monday, December 23, 2013. Cuvée du Clos Notre Dame 2004 Vve Fourny et Fils. Slow, purposeful mousse. Chantilly cream and lemon shortbread on the nose. Very good biscuit/fruit balance. Closed but intense. As it gets air, there's a fresh cep earthiness that comes through. Tasted 24 November 2013 somewhere in Fulham. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

wine rant: September 2012
http://winerant.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Friday, September 14, 2012. Salt and old vines. Tasted quite a lot of very good juice and early ferments. Roussanne and Marsanne both looking to once again be exceptional this year. There's a bit more acidity than usual, which in that part of the world is a good thing. As always, I'm excited to see how the wines turn out. I wish I could have been there longer. Tight knit, intens...

wine rant: sweet bubbles
http://winerant.blogspot.com/2013/12/sweet-bubbles.html
A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Tuesday, December 03, 2013. Doyard Le Libertine Champagne Doux. This is really expensive. It was €120 at the cellar door. They wouldn’t tell us anything about it, other than it was bottled in 2008 and dosaged to 135g/l of residual sugar. I’d never had a Doux Champagne before. My closest comparison, in my mind, was sparkling Icewine from Canada&#...Intense, slightly funky nose of...

A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Tuesday, April 01, 2014. Penfolds Release Ultra-Premium Single Grape Cuvee. Do children still play with marbles? That single Marble is priced at £1,000,000. When asked if this was a little steep, a Penfolds representative scoffed, “Really, it ought to be priceless, but if it was we couldn’t sell it, so we just came up with something ridiculously expensive. Maybe ...Obviously wit...

http://winerant.blogspot.com/2013/12/duval-leroy-blanc-de-chardonnay-1998.html
A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Monday, December 16, 2013. Duval Leroy Blanc de Chardonnay 1998 (served blind). I served this blind on Champagne Sunday a few weeks ago. It showed better than I expected. Slow bubbles - colour showing perfectly for the age - a hint of gold and bronze. Nose is buttered mushrooms, a bit of oyster shell, and a touch of licorice. It gets more floral with air. A selection of tasting notes and opinions from an ex-sommelier, wine merchant and occasional winemaker in London and elsewhere. Thursday, July 04, 2013. I submitted the manuscript last Sunday night, and the book is fully funded (though you can still support it here). Here's a fairly ordinary Champagne that you should avoid. More soon. Barnaut Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Bouzy. Good pale gold. Speedy, tiny bubbles. Bruised strawberries, green apples, a bit of hay and shortbread. Perhaps a touch of cocoa.

New writing, experiments, stuff. Posted March 9, 2009 by richard. Sometimes he felt the sea too quiet. It lapped the butterscotch sand with a soft whisper next to him. He closed his eyes and the whisper gave no hint as to the vastness of it. His feet sank slightly. Cool damp seeped through his trainers. He clenched his toes against the cold and opened his eyes again. A fine ripple crashed and raced a foot or two up the beach. That was a different sea. She wasn’t coming back. At the door he let a couple o...
