After eleven years in Utah, I've been given the amazing opportunity to take a little more than a year off. This leave of absence was generously given to my by my school in order to join the University of Virginia's Semester at Sea program in the Spring 2013 on a trip from San Diego, CA to Barcelona Spain. We are presently back underway and headed for Capetown South Africa. We have six days there and I am greatly looking forward to getting to know the area a bit. Three times a year Amboseli National Park and the Kenya Wildlife service conducts a census of the wildlife of the National Park. This is a pretty large effort involving thirty or so people and eight vehicles. The census is coordinated by Dr. Shem here at the SFS Center and we were fortunate enough to have it fall exactly on our last day in Kenya. Two Hundred and Seventy Degrees Into the Sunset. Thursday, April 11, 2013. A walk in the woods. We did however discover a very cool green tree snake that seemed unfazed by our traffic. Following the rainforest trek we bussed down to a local restaurant and had a nice local lunch. Like East Africa, the food was heavy on meat and thick sauces. The vegetarians in our group didn't love the offerings but I found it plenty tasty. Our plan for the next day? Yes, this is a coffin. And she has to dodge motorcycles!

Two Hundred and Seventy Degrees Into the Sunset. Friday, April 5, 2013. At 1443 (2:43 pm) today April 5, we crossed the equator (0 degrees North/South) at the Prime Meridian (0 degrees East/West). This is a featureless point off the west coast of Africa and has no significance except for geeky-types like me. Whee! One minute it's fall, the next spring. Actually it's pretty hot and feels like summer on both sides of both imaginary lines. We arrive in Ghana tomorrow morning.
